## What it does

First it classifies the failing surface: page shell, reusable component, dense data and toolbars, media, or reflow. Then it picks exactly one primary packet — `page-layout`, `component-slot`, `dense-data`, `media-behavior` or `verification-reflow` — and lists the rest as follow-up. The output is a short brief: scope, current signal, first slice, layout decisions, verification plan, ownership.

It fits frontend and fullstack repos using CSS, utility frameworks or component libraries. Viewport rules own page-shell changes; container rules own reusable slot adaptation. Breakpoints follow content pressure, not device brand names. Dense tables and filter bars get explicit fallback choices instead of generic advice. Responsive media means thinking about `srcset`, `sizes` and aspect ratio, not just a full-width image.

Neighboring work is routed away on purpose: component API design and breakpoint or token governance go to `design-system`, accessibility remediation and broad UI audits to `web-accessibility`, React hydration and rerender churn to `react-best-practices`. If the strategy is already clear, skip the router and implement. Zoom and long-copy stress checks are part of the plan, so a launch pass does not stall on overflow nobody tested.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill responsive-design -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/responsive-design/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/responsive-design/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill responsive-design -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/responsive-design/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill responsive-design -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/responsive-design/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install akillness/jeo-skills responsive-design
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/responsive-design/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill responsive-design -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/akillness/jeo-skills --path .agent-skills/responsive-design
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/responsive-design/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill responsive-design -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/akillness/jeo-skills/tree/HEAD/.agent-skills/responsive-design/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- classify a “breaks on mobile” report into one responsive surface
- decide between viewport rules and container queries for a card
- plan fallback behavior for a dense table or filter bar
- work out `srcset`, `sizes` and aspect ratio for an embed
- check overflow and wrapping under zoom and long copy

## Example prompts
- Figure out why the dashboard breaks on narrow screens and build a strategy packet
- Plan responsive behavior for the card grid: viewport queries or container queries?
- Check the orders table for overflow under zoom and long headings

# Responsive Design

Use this skill when the job is to **name the failing responsive surface, choose the smallest viable adaptation packet, and leave behind a short strategy + verification brief**.

The job is not to dump generic CSS recipes, paste framework snippets, or absorb every neighboring frontend concern.

This skill should:
1. classify the responsive failure first,
2. choose one primary responsive packet,
3. keep viewport vs container ownership explicit,
4. separate dense-data and media cases from generic layout advice,
5. keep reflow/verification visible,
6. route neighboring frontend work honestly.

Read these support docs first:

- [references/layout-decision-checklist.md](references/layout-decision-checklist.md)
- [references/handoff-boundaries.md](references/handoff-boundaries.md)

## When to use this skill
- A team says “this page breaks on mobile” and the real responsive surface is still unclear.
- A dashboard, nav, form, card grid, pricing page, table, or embed needs a responsive strategy before more breakpoints are added.
