A skill for drafting and revising research papers: it maps claims to evidence, plans sections, and helps you answer reviewers.

## What it does

The skill walks a manuscript through stages. First it locks a paper contract: target venue, the single strongest claim, the evidence that claim needs, and limits on length or anonymity. Then it builds a claim-evidence table so no promised contribution survives without an experiment, an ablation, or an explicit scope boundary. The abstract, introduction, method, and experiments sections are drafted from that table.

Three reference notes ship with it: `references/claim-evidence-packet.md`, `references/experiment-and-figure-coverage.md`, and `references/rebuttal-and-camera-ready.md`. The abstract is written from problem to result rather than in chronological order. The introduction follows five moves, from motivation to contribution bullets. The method section has to answer what the inputs and outputs are, which modules the system contains, what training objective is used, and which assumptions matter. For reviewer replies, the skill suggests a response matrix before you write any prose.

It targets ML, CV, NLP, and systems papers, not general prose cleanup. If you are writing an internal design doc, an ADR, or end-user documentation, the author points you to other skills in the same collection. Installation runs through `npx skills add`, so you need Node.js with npx; GitHub Copilot uses a separate `gh skill install` command.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill research-paper-writing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/research-paper-writing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/research-paper-writing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill research-paper-writing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/research-paper-writing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill research-paper-writing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/research-paper-writing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install akillness/jeo-skills research-paper-writing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/research-paper-writing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill research-paper-writing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/akillness/jeo-skills --path .agent-skills/research-paper-writing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/research-paper-writing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill research-paper-writing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- rewrite an abstract around measurable results instead of chronology
- structure an introduction from motivation to contribution bullets
- turn code results and notes into a reproducible method section
- plan ablations and error analysis for each claim
- write a reviewer response backed by evidence

## Example prompts
- rewrite my abstract using this draft and the results table
- build an experiment and ablation plan for our main contribution
- draft a reviewer response from this concern matrix

# research-paper-writing

Use this skill when the job is not generic prose cleanup, but turning research work into a **defensible manuscript package**.

The center of gravity is:
- contribution framing,
- claim → evidence alignment,
- section-level structure,
- figure/table support,
- reviewer-facing completeness,
- rebuttal and camera-ready revision.

Read these support notes before drafting or revising:
- [references/claim-evidence-packet.md](references/claim-evidence-packet.md)
- [references/experiment-and-figure-coverage.md](references/experiment-and-figure-coverage.md)
- [references/rebuttal-and-camera-ready.md](references/rebuttal-and-camera-ready.md)

## When to use this skill

- Drafting or rewriting an abstract around concrete claims and measurable evidence
- Structuring an introduction so motivation, gap, method, and contributions land quickly
- Turning notes, code results, or slide bullets into a method section with reproducible detail
- Designing experiment, ablation, error-analysis, or figure/table coverage for a paper
- Writing related work that positions the paper instead of listing references
- Tightening a rebuttal, reviewer response, or camera-ready revision plan under strict limits
- Checking whether the manuscript actually supports each promised contribution

## When not to use this skill
