## What it does

This skill establishes shared frontend rules before developers start polishing separate screens. It classifies requests into five modes: token foundations, cross-surface alignment, primitive governance, system handoffs, or consistency reviews. The agent focuses on typography scales and variant APIs. It prioritizes structure over mockups.

Execution relies on standard repo tools including `Bash`, `Read`, `Write`, `Edit`, `Glob`, and `Grep`. The workflow requires defining minimal shared decisions before generating any token code. Examples remain strictly subordinate to core system rules. Unknown layers stay marked as open decisions rather than invented details.

Scope boundaries are strict. Layout overflow and viewport adaptation route to `responsive-design`, while keyboard accessibility and contrast remediation belong in `web-accessibility`. If system rules are already settled and only implementation remains, this skill is unnecessary.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill design-system -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/design-system/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/design-system/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill design-system -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/design-system/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill design-system -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/design-system/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install akillness/jeo-skills design-system
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/design-system/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill design-system -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/akillness/jeo-skills --path .agent-skills/design-system
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/design-system/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill design-system -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- define token scales for typography, spacing, radius, and color
- align visual hierarchy across landing pages and dashboard apps
- establish naming conventions and variant APIs for reusable primitives
- generate a structured design system handoff package for frontend teams

## Example prompts
- Set up a design token policy for color, spacing, and typography across our app.
- Align the visual language between our marketing landing page and user dashboard.
- Define primitive naming rules and variant slot APIs for our shared component library.

# Design System

Use this skill when the main question is **"what shared UI rules should govern this product or product family before we design or refactor individual screens?"**

This is the repo's **canonical frontend UI-system anchor**.
It should:
1. classify the system problem,
2. choose the right design-system mode,
3. route neighboring frontend work out early,
4. define a compact system packet another human or agent can execute.

Read [references/system-modes.md](references/system-modes.md) before choosing an approach.
Read [references/token-and-governance-checklist.md](references/token-and-governance-checklist.md) before changing shared tokens, primitives, or naming rules.
Read [references/scope-boundaries.md](references/scope-boundaries.md) when deciding whether the work belongs here, `responsive-design`, or `web-accessibility`.
Read [references/design-system-packet-template.md](references/design-system-packet-template.md) before writing the final handoff.

## When to use this skill
- Define or refactor a shared design system for a product, product suite, or app + marketing surface
- Set token policy for color, typography, spacing, radius, elevation, motion, and breakpoint scales
- Choose primitive naming rules, contribution boundaries, and reusable visual-language conventions
