## What it does

changelog-maintenance turns repository history, ticket exports, pull requests, and existing changelog files into a focused release-writing packet. It covers `CHANGELOG.md` entries, audience-facing release notes, migration and deprecation updates, plus short patch notes for games.

The skill separates changelog, release-notes, migration-update, and game-patch-notes work, then accounts for audience and publishing surface. Its guidance covers evidence checks, boundary decisions, and handoffs to deeper documentation. Draft output from Release Drafter or Changesets can be used as input.

This is a prompt-only skill that reads repository history, ticket exports, and changelog files. That means release notes should be based on shipped evidence rather than roadmap text. It uses `Read`, `Write`, `Edit`, `Glob`, and `Grep`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill changelog-maintenance -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/changelog-maintenance/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/changelog-maintenance/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill changelog-maintenance -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/changelog-maintenance/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill changelog-maintenance -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/changelog-maintenance/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install akillness/jeo-skills changelog-maintenance
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/changelog-maintenance/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill changelog-maintenance -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/akillness/jeo-skills --path .agent-skills/changelog-maintenance
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/changelog-maintenance/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill changelog-maintenance -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/akillness/jeo-skills/tree/HEAD/.agent-skills/changelog-maintenance/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- refresh `CHANGELOG.md` from merged release work
- turn PRs and Git history into release notes
- document a shipped breaking change or deprecation
- prepare a migration update with required actions
- condense a game update into patch notes

## Example prompts
- Update `CHANGELOG.md` from the merged PRs and the current release tag.
- Create release notes from the Git history and explain the user-facing impact of each shipped change.
- Write a migration update for the released breaking change and list the actions readers must take.

Use when the main job is turning shipped evidence into the smallest truthful release-writing packet for developers, customers, internal stakeholders, or players. Also owns the retired `release-notes` name: turn tickets, PRDs, or Git logs into user-facing notes that lead with the benefit. Triggers on: changelog, release notes, patch notes, migration update, deprecation notice, version notes, what shipped, what changed, what's new, announce product updates. Route internal specs/runbooks to `technical-writing`, API portals to `api-documentation`, end-user tutorials to `technical-writing`, rollout execution to `deployment-automation`, and launch messaging to `marketing-automation`."

# Changelog Maintenance

Use this skill when the deliverable is **release history or shipped-change communication**, not a broad documentation or launch-campaign bundle.

`changelog-maintenance` is the documentation-cluster anchor for:
- `CHANGELOG.md` upkeep
- GitHub / GitLab / docs-site release notes
- migration and deprecation updates tied to a shipped change
- customer-facing “what changed” summaries
- lightweight game patch notes and small update posts

Read these support docs before choosing the mode or boundary:
- [references/modes-and-boundaries.md](references/modes-and-boundaries.md)
- [references/output-packets-and-channel-handoffs.md](references/output-packets-and-channel-handoffs.md)
- [references/release-note-quality-checklist.md](references/release-note-quality-checklist.md)
- [references/automation-and-source-of-truth.md](references/automation-and-source-of-truth.md)

## When to use this skill
- A repo needs a durable changelog entry or `Unreleased` refresh based on shipped work
- A release needs audience-appropriate notes for developers, customers, internal stakeholders, or players
- A breaking change, deprecation, or compatibility shift needs a migration update linked from release history
- Release automation drafted notes, but the output still needs truthful grouping, clearer wording, or better route-outs
