# Exploratory Data Analysis

A skill that walks the agent through first-pass dataset analysis: profiling, distributions, correlations and outlier checks in Python. Useful before you build a model.

## What it does

The skill sets an order for working with a new dataset: profile first, plots second. It ships ready Python blocks built on `pandas`, `numpy`, `matplotlib` and `seaborn` — table shape, column types, missing values, duplicates, `describe()`, histograms, box plots, a correlation heatmap and `pairplot`.

Then comes the part people usually skip: skewness and kurtosis per numeric column, percentiles, `groupby` breakdowns, feature correlation against the target, IQR-based outlier detection and an automated insights pass. The skill also lists common pitfalls — over-reading patterns in small samples, ignoring domain context, not writing findings down.

The examples import `pandas`, `numpy`, `matplotlib` and `seaborn`, so those need to be in your environment. Output is a set of artifacts: a data quality report, summary statistics with charts, a list of anomalies and hypotheses to test. That is a reason to hold off on feeding a raw table straight into a model.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill exploratory-data-analysis -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/exploratory-data-analysis/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/exploratory-data-analysis/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill exploratory-data-analysis -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/exploratory-data-analysis/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill exploratory-data-analysis -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/exploratory-data-analysis/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts exploratory-data-analysis
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/exploratory-data-analysis/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill exploratory-data-analysis -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --path skills/exploratory-data-analysis
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/exploratory-data-analysis/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill exploratory-data-analysis -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- understand an unfamiliar dataset before modeling
- spot missing values and duplicate rows
- inspect distributions of numeric columns
- flag outliers with the IQR rule
- collect hypotheses worth testing later

## Example prompts
- Run EDA on `customer_data.csv`: profile, distributions, correlations
- Find outliers and missing values in this dataset and suggest what to do
- Build a data quality report with charts for stakeholders

# Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA)

## Overview

Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) is the critical first step in data science projects, systematically examining datasets to understand their characteristics, identify patterns, and assess data quality before formal modeling.

## Core Concepts

- **Data Profiling**: Understanding basic statistics and data types
- **Distribution Analysis**: Examining how variables are distributed
- **Relationship Discovery**: Identifying patterns between variables
- **Anomaly Detection**: Finding outliers and unusual patterns
- **Data Quality Assessment**: Evaluating completeness and consistency

## When to Use

- Starting a new dataset analysis
- Understanding data before modeling
- Identifying data quality issues
- Generating hypotheses for testing
- Communicating insights to stakeholders

## Implementation with Python

```python
import pandas as pd
import numpy as np
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
import seaborn as sns
# Load and explore data
df = pd.read_csv('customer_data.csv')
# Basic profiling
print(f"Shape: {df.shape}")
print(f"Data types:\n{df.dtypes}")
print(f"Missing values:\n{df.isnull().sum()}")
print(f"Duplicates: {df.duplicated().sum()}")
# Statistical summary
print(df.describe())
print(df.describe(include='object'))
# Distribution analysis - numerical columns
fig, axes = plt.subplots(2, 2, figsize=(12, 8))
df['age'].hist(bins=30, ax=axes[0, 0])
axes[0, 0].set_title('Age Distribution')
df['income'].hist(bins=30, ax=axes[0, 1])
axes[0, 1].set_title('Income Distribution')
# Box plots for outlier detection
df.boxplot(column='age', by='region', ax=axes[1, 0])
axes[1, 0].set_title('Age by Region')
# Categorical analysis
df['category'].value_counts().plot(kind='bar', ax=axes[1, 1])
axes[1, 1].set_title('Category Distribution')
plt.tight_layout()
plt.show()
# Correlation analysis
numeric_df = df.select_dtypes(include=[np.number])
correlation_matrix = numeric_df.corr()
plt.figure(figsize=(10, 8))
sns.heatmap(correlation_matrix, annot=True, cmap='coolwarm', center=0)
plt.title('Correlation Matrix')
plt.show()
# Multivariate relationships
sns.pairplot(df[['age', 'income', 'education_years']], diag_kind='hist')
plt.show()
# Skewness and kurtosis
print("\nSkewness:")
print(numeric_df.skew())
print("\nKurtosis:")
print(numeric_df.kurtosis())
