## What it does

The skill hands your agent a set of `af` commands for everyday Airflow operations. List DAGs, trigger a run, pause scheduling, pull the log of a failed task, check connections, variables and pools — it all goes through one interface. Raw REST access is there too, via `af api <endpoint>`.

Inside is a command reference with a description for each entry, multi-instance handling through `af instance add`, `af instance use` and `af instance list`, and a config layout that mirrors `git config` with global, project-shared and project-local scopes. Tokens can live in environment variables using `${VAR}` syntax. The skill is an entrypoint: it routes to sibling skills for authoring, testing, deploying and migrating Airflow 2 to 3.

Commands assume `af` is already on PATH. Run it through `astro otto`, or install it standalone with `uv tool install astro-airflow-mcp`. Instance discovery via `af instance discover` without `--dry-run` creates API tokens in Astro Cloud, so preview first and get consent. Warehouse analytics on Airflow metadata tables and deep root-cause reports belong to other skills — this one does not replace them.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astronomer/agents --skill airflow -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/airflow/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/airflow/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astronomer/agents --skill airflow -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/airflow/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astronomer/agents --skill airflow -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/airflow/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install astronomer/agents airflow
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/airflow/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astronomer/agents --skill airflow -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/astronomer/agents --path skills/airflow
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/airflow/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astronomer/agents --skill airflow -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/astronomer/agents/tree/HEAD/skills/airflow/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- trigger a DAG and wait for the run to finish
- read a failed task log to find the cause
- debug an import or parse error in a DAG
- switch between prod and staging instances
- inspect connections, variables and pools

## Example prompts
- List my DAGs and their latest runs
- Why did my DAG fail? Pull the task logs
- Trigger daily_etl and wait for it to complete

name: airflow
description: Queries, manages, and troubleshoots Apache Airflow using the `af` CLI. Use when working with anything related to Airflow - a DAG, a DAG run, a task log, an import or parse error, a broken DAG, or any Airflow operation. Covers listing and triggering DAGs, retrying runs, reading task logs, diagnosing failures, debugging import and parse errors, checking connections, variables and pools, exploring the REST API, and monitoring health (for example "trigger a pipeline", "retry a run", "list connections", "check Airflow health", "why did my DAG fail"). This is the entrypoint that routes to sibling skills for authoring, testing, deploying, and migrating Airflow 2 to 3. Not for warehouse/SQL analytics on Airflow metadata tables (use analyzing-data); for deep root-cause reports use debugging-dags or airflow-investigation.

# Airflow Operations

Use `af` commands to query, manage, and troubleshoot Airflow workflows.

## Astro CLI

The [Astro CLI](https://www.astronomer.io/docs/astro/cli/overview) is the recommended way to run Airflow locally and deploy to production. It provides a containerized Airflow environment that works out of the box:

```bash
# Initialize a new project
astro dev init
# Start local Airflow (webserver at http://localhost:8080)
astro dev start
# Parse DAGs to catch errors quickly (no need to start Airflow)
astro dev parse
# Run pytest against your DAGs
astro dev pytest
# Deploy to production
astro deploy            # Full deploy (image + DAGs)
astro deploy --dags     # DAG-only deploy (fast, no image build)
```

For more details:
- **New project?** See the **setting-up-astro-project** skill
- **Local environment?** See the **managing-astro-local-env** skill
- **Deploying?** See the **deploying-airflow** skill

## Running the CLI

These commands assume `af` is on PATH. Run via `astro otto` to get it automatically, or install standalone with `uv tool install astro-airflow-mcp`.

## Instance Configuration

Manage multiple Airflow instances with persistent configuration:

```bash
# Add a new instance
af instance add prod --url https://airflow.example.com --token "$API_TOKEN"
af instance add staging --url https://staging.example.com --username admin --password admin
# List and switch instances
af instance list      # Shows all instances in a table
af instance use prod  # Switch to prod instance
af instance current   # Show current instance
af instance delete old-instance
# Auto-discover instances (use --dry-run to preview first)
af instance discover --dry-run        # Preview all discoverable instances
af instance discover                  # Discover from all backends (astro, local)
af instance discover astro            # Discover Astro deployments only
af instance discover astro --all-workspaces  # Include all accessible workspaces
af instance discover local            # Scan common local Airflow ports
