## What it does

The skill treats an AI impact assessment as a documented decision, not a form. It starts by reading `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/ai-governance-legal/CLAUDE.md` and confirming the house style is populated, then picks a risk track — fast or full — from the governance tier and the use case itself.

Intake is conversational. You describe what the system does, how it reaches its outputs, who is affected when it is wrong, and what oversight exists. For every regime in the regulatory footprint the skill researches risk tier, prohibited-practice exposure and applicable obligations, citing primary sources. Output is the assessment document, a conditions list, and handoff flags for a privacy PIA or vendor review.

An AIA is not a PIA. A PIA asks whether personal data is handled lawfully; an AIA asks whether the system is designed and deployed responsibly, and the two often run in parallel. One thing to check before you start: if the system is deployed outside the footprint in `## Regulatory footprint`, the analysis does not apply as written — expand the footprint and re-run. The skill also refuses to paper over thin research: when a query to the configured legal research tool returns little, it reports what it found and stops rather than filling the gap from model knowledge.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill aia-generation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/aia-generation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/aia-generation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill aia-generation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/aia-generation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill aia-generation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/aia-generation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install anthropics/claude-for-legal aia-generation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/aia-generation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill aia-generation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/anthropics/claude-for-legal --path ai-governance-legal/skills/aia-generation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/aia-generation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill aia-generation -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/anthropics/claude-for-legal/tree/HEAD/ai-governance-legal/skills/aia-generation/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- document a deployment decision for an AI system
- map risks and obligations across each regime in scope
- diff the system against the company AI policy commitments
- decide whether a full assessment is needed or a short record will do
- flag handoffs to a privacy PIA or vendor review

## Example prompts
- /ai-governance-legal:aia-generation "AI résumé screening for HR"
- run an AIA for this use case and list the deployment conditions
- assess this AI system against our regulatory footprint

# /aia-generation

1. Read `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/ai-governance-legal/CLAUDE.md`. Confirm impact assessment house style is populated.
2. Determine risk track (fast or full) from governance tier and use case characteristics, using the framework below.
3. Run intake — conversational, not a form.
4. Regulatory classification for each regime in the footprint — research tier, prohibited-practice exposure, and applicable obligations; cite primary sources.
5. Write assessment in house style (from seed doc, or default if none captured).
6. Policy diff against `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/ai-governance-legal/CLAUDE.md` AI policy commitments.
7. Output: assessment doc + conditions list + handoff flags (privacy PIA, vendor review if needed).

```
/ai-governance-legal:aia-generation "AI résumé screening for HR"
## Matter context
**Matter context.** Check `## Matter workspaces` in the practice-level CLAUDE.md. If `Enabled` is `✗` (the default for in-house users), skip the rest of this paragraph — skills use practice-level context and the matter machinery is invisible. If enabled and there is no active matter, ask: "Which matter is this for? Run `/ai-governance-legal:matter-workspace switch <slug>` or say `practice-level`." Load the active matter's `matter.md` for matter-specific context and overrides. Write outputs to the matter folder at `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/ai-governance-legal/matters/<matter-slug>/`. Never read another matter's files unless `Cross-matter context` is `on`.
