## What it does

This skill covers design patterns for AI-powered React interfaces and kicks in when the agent touches `**/*.tsx` and `**/*.jsx` files. It walks through two setups: a plain Vite app and a Next.js app. The agent gets guidance on streaming model output, keeping conversation state, and debouncing input so a keystroke doesn't fire an API call.

Its toolset is narrow: `Read`, `Grep`, `Glob`. It reads and searches your code, nothing more. Context is forked, so the work happens in a separate branch and doesn't crowd your main conversation. The examples use the Vercel AI SDK with the `useChat` hook, OpenAI as the provider, and TailwindCSS for styling — the SDK also supports other providers, so swapping is a config change.

Keep the API key on the server. In Next.js that means a route handler; in Vite you need a separate backend, because the key must not reach client code. If you already have your own layer for model calls, some of the advice will sit on top of it and you'll have to pick one approach.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill ai-ui-patterns -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ai-ui-patterns/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ai-ui-patterns/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill ai-ui-patterns -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ai-ui-patterns/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill ai-ui-patterns -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ai-ui-patterns/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install PatternsDev/skills ai-ui-patterns
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ai-ui-patterns/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill ai-ui-patterns -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/PatternsDev/skills --path react/ai-ui-patterns
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ai-ui-patterns/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill ai-ui-patterns -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/PatternsDev/skills/tree/HEAD/react/ai-ui-patterns/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build a chat UI that streams model responses
- move AI calls off the client so the key stays hidden
- debounce input for autocomplete
- separate message components from data fetching
- add error handling and fallbacks to the UX

## Example prompts
- Build a React chat with the Vercel AI SDK: stream responses, keep message history, disable input while the answer streams
- Split ChatMessage and InputBox so they know nothing about data fetching
- Check that the OpenAI key never reaches client code and move the calls to the server

Building AI-powered interfaces – from chatbots to intelligent assistants – requires careful integration of backend AI services with reactive UI components. In this chapter, we explore design patterns in React for such interfaces, focusing on **two implementations**: a plain React app (using Vite) and a Next.js app. We'll use **OpenAI's API** (via the Vercel AI SDK) as our AI engine, and TailwindCSS for styling. Key topics include prompt management, streaming responses, input debouncing, error handling, and how these patterns differ between Vite and Next.js. We also highlight reusable component patterns and **Vercel's AI UI components (AI Elements)** for building polished chat UIs.

## When to Use

- Use this when building conversational AI interfaces that stream responses from LLMs
- This is helpful for integrating OpenAI, Anthropic, or other AI providers into React applications
- Use this when you need patterns for prompt management, streaming, error handling, and AI-specific UI

## Instructions

- Use the Vercel AI SDK's `useChat` hook for managing conversation state and streaming responses
- Keep API keys on the server — use Next.js API routes or a separate backend for AI calls
- Enable streaming (`stream: true`) for responsive real-time output in chat interfaces
- Debounce input for autocomplete features; disable input during response streaming for chat
- Build reusable components (ChatMessage, InputBox) decoupled from data-fetching logic

## Details

> **Note:** While this article uses OpenAI as an example, the Vercel AI SDK supports multiple model providers including **Gemini**, **OpenAI**, and **Anthropic**. You can easily swap between providers through the SDK's unified interface – we're just choosing one option for demonstration purposes.
