# ai-test-generation

A staged test generation pipeline working from specs, PRDs, diffs, and OpenAPI schemas. Stops LLMs from creating hallucinated endpoints or empty assertions.

## What it does

This skill writes new test suites through a mandatory seven-step pipeline instead of generating raw test code right away. It accepts PRDs, user stories with acceptance criteria, git diffs, bug reports, and OpenAPI or GraphQL schemas. The workflow extracts explicit and implicit rules, maps risks, creates a coverage matrix, and specifies test oracles before writing any executable code.

Separating scenario mapping from assertion design prevents the model from writing tests biased toward trivial checks. If present, `.agents/qa-project-context.md` supplies framework preferences, selector strategies, and domain invariants directly to the pipeline. Supported testing tools include Playwright, Cypress, Jest, Vitest, and pytest.

This pipeline cannot evaluate AI or LLM components inside your software; you need `ai-system-testing` for that purpose. It also does not audit pre-existing test suites outside the ones produced in the current run.

## Requirements
- Works with: Playwright

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill ai-test-generation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ai-test-generation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ai-test-generation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill ai-test-generation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ai-test-generation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill ai-test-generation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ai-test-generation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install petrkindlmann/qa-skills ai-test-generation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ai-test-generation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill ai-test-generation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/petrkindlmann/qa-skills --path skills/ai-test-generation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ai-test-generation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill ai-test-generation -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/petrkindlmann/qa-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/ai-test-generation/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- generate end-to-end tests from an OpenAPI schema
- create regression tests based on changed paths in git diff
- turn acceptance criteria into positive and boundary test scenarios
- build a reproducer test from a bug report before fixing code

## Example prompts
- Generate Playwright tests based on the new endpoints in openapi.json
- Create unit tests for modified logic in git diff main...HEAD
- Write pytest cases covering acceptance criteria in feature-spec.md

  Use AI to write NEW test code from specs, PRDs, user stories, code diffs, bug

  human review, with guardrails against hallucinated APIs and weak assertions.

  Not for: testing AI/LLM features in your product — use ai-system-testing.

<objective>
LLMs will happily emit fifty plausible-looking tests that assert nothing, target endpoints that do not exist, and duplicate each other. This skill is a staged pipeline that forces structured intermediates — assumptions, coverage matrix, oracle definitions — out of the model BEFORE any test code, so what you get is traceable, reviewable, and grounded in the real codebase instead of ad-hoc generated noise.

**Before starting:** Check for `.agents/qa-project-context.md` in the project root. It carries tech stack, test frameworks, naming conventions, selector strategy, and known risk areas that dramatically improve generated test quality.
</objective>

## Quick Route

The pipeline is the same for every input; only the Step 1 extraction emphasis changes. Jump to the matching row, then run Steps 2-7 unchanged.

| Input type | Step 1 extracts | Watch for |
|------------|-----------------|-----------|
| PRD / feature spec | Entities, business rules, acceptance criteria, NFRs, stated assumptions | Implicit requirements inferred from "seamless"/"fast" language |
| User story + AC | Each AC → ≥1 happy + ≥1 negative scenario | ACs that hide multiple behaviors in one line |
| Code diff (`git diff main...HEAD`) | New/changed code paths, modified conditionals, removed behavior | Regression scope: test the changed paths, not the whole module |
| Bug report | Repro steps, expected vs actual, environment | Write a test asserting *expected* — fails now, passes after fix |
| OpenAPI / GraphQL SDL | Endpoints, schemas, required fields, enums, auth | Validation, auth-failure, and edge cases per endpoint, not just 200s |

Playwright projects also pick an agent integration mode — see Discovery Q2.
