## What it does

AI features break differently from deterministic code. The same input returns different answers, and a chatbot that confidently cites a made-up URL sails through every `toBeDefined()` check. The skill lays out how to test such features anyway: versioned prompts, eval suites scored against golden datasets, tool-call validation, grounding checks and red-team safety scans.

Inside there is a routing table that points to separate files. `references/prompt-regression.md` covers prompt regressions, `references/eval-framework.md` handles scoring open-ended output, `references/tooling-evals.md` covers cross-provider comparison, tool-call validation and safety scans, and `references/injection-detector.md` is for the case where an agent reads tool output, RAG results or scan reports. A bundled detector for untrusted content comes with it. A tooling table picks the layer for the job: Promptfoo for regressions and redteam scans, DeepEval for pytest-style evals and tool-call metrics, Ragas for RAG metrics such as faithfulness.

The skill is not for generating your own test code with AI — that is ai-test-generation. Not for classifying CI failures — that is ai-bug-triage. Not for EU AI Act or GDPR conformity — that is compliance-testing. Not for canary rollout of an AI feature — that is testing-in-production. If your prompts are hardcoded or built dynamically, they cannot be regression-tested, so versioning them comes first.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill ai-system-testing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ai-system-testing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ai-system-testing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill ai-system-testing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ai-system-testing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill ai-system-testing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ai-system-testing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install petrkindlmann/qa-skills ai-system-testing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ai-system-testing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill ai-system-testing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/petrkindlmann/qa-skills --path skills/ai-system-testing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ai-system-testing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill ai-system-testing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/petrkindlmann/qa-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/ai-system-testing/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- catch a quality drop after a prompt edit
- score an open-ended answer for relevance and completeness
- verify the agent picked the right tool and arguments
- find hallucinations and grounding gaps in RAG
- run red-team scans before a chatbot ships

## Example prompts
- run a prompt regression on our summarization feature
- check RAG grounding for answers over our knowledge base
- red-team the chatbot before launch

<objective>
AI features fail differently from deterministic software. The same input produces different outputs, correctness is subjective, and failure modes include hallucination, prompt injection, and silent quality decay. A chatbot that confidently cites a fabricated URL passes every `toBeDefined()` check. This skill covers how to test AI features rigorously despite nondeterminism: versioned prompts, eval suites scored against golden datasets, statistical and property-based assertions, tool-call validation, grounding checks, and red-team safety scans.

| Situation | Go to |
|-----------|-------|
| Prompt changed, need to catch quality regressions | Prompt Regression Testing → `references/prompt-regression.md` |
| Run the same prompt across providers/models and compare | Cross-Provider Regression → `references/tooling-evals.md` |
| Score open-ended output (relevance/completeness/safety) | Response Quality Evaluation → `references/eval-framework.md` |
