## What it does

The skill implements Generative Engine Optimization. AI answer engines do not rely solely on official product pages. They retrieve data from Reddit discussions and YouTube transcripts. The skill loads `brand-profile.md` and `audience.md` to define buyer intent. It then runs an audit across 10–30 queries in fresh sessions to check whether models cite the brand.

Optimization relies on four pillars. These include crawler accessibility, third-party mentions, extractable content formats, and clear entity definitions. If CDN settings or `robots.txt` block `OAI-SearchBot` or `PerplexityBot`, search models cannot index your pages at all.

This skill refuses astroturfing and fabricated share-of-voice numbers. It delegates standard search discovery to the sibling skill `social-seo`, keeping its focus directly on generative answer engines.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill ai-search-optimization -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ai-search-optimization/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ai-search-optimization/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill ai-search-optimization -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ai-search-optimization/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill ai-search-optimization -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ai-search-optimization/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install social-media-skills/skills ai-search-optimization
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ai-search-optimization/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill ai-search-optimization -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/social-media-skills/skills --path skills/ai-search-optimization
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ai-search-optimization/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill ai-search-optimization -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/social-media-skills/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/ai-search-optimization/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- audit brand presence across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini
- structure web content with Q&A blocks and data tables for AI citation
- verify crawler access for OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot
- establish entity clarity across external platforms and review directories

## Example prompts
- Run a GEO prompt audit for our core product queries across Perplexity and ChatGPT.
- Check our robots.txt and schema markup so AI search bots can extract citations.
- Analyze which community discussions and media mentions we need to enter AI answers.

# AI Search Optimization (GEO)

Get your brand **into the answer** when people ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI, Gemini, or Copilot
a question in your space — instead of watching a competitor get named. This is **GEO** (Generative
Engine Optimization; also AEO/LLMO): optimizing to be **cited and recommended** by AI engines. It
supplements search/SEO; it doesn't replace it.

Four truths shape everything:

1. **AI answers are built by retrieval + fan-out.** Engines retrieve live from search indexes
   (ChatGPT via OpenAI's own crawler/index, OAI-SearchBot — historically Bing-seeded; Google feeds
   AI Overviews/AI Mode) and split your topic into sub-queries — so **ranking in search feeds AI
   citation**, and you optimize for a constellation of questions.
2. **AI cites community/social sources most.** Reddit, YouTube, Wikipedia, LinkedIn, listicles and
   review sites dominate citations — **the cited pages are usually not your pages.** Earned mentions
   beat product pages.
3. **Platforms disagree.** ChatGPT skews Wikipedia, Perplexity skews Reddit, AI Overviews lean on
   E-E-A-T + the community web. Optimizing for one ≠ all.
4. **Extractable, fresh, well-sourced content gets quoted.** Quotations, statistics, citations, Q&A
   structure, and schema lift citation; stale content gets displaced.
