## What it does

The skill examines a prompt for harmful-content risks, violence or hate speech, misinformation, illegal activity, bias, data exposure, prompt injection, information leaks, and access-control issues. It also checks clarity, context, constraints, output format, specificity, and the selected prompt pattern.

Its report includes task classification, safety findings, effectiveness scores, pattern analysis, technical checks, performance observations, critical issues, and strengths. The template then asks for an improved prompt plus added safety measures, bias reduction, security changes, and clearer wording.

Because prompt injection and information leakage are separate checks, this skill is a useful gate before a prompt is used with sensitive inputs. It is installed as a skill file for GitHub Copilot.

## Install

### GitHub Copilot (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add github/awesome-copilot --skill ai-prompt-engineering-safety-review
```

2. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install github/awesome-copilot ai-prompt-engineering-safety-review
```

3. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ai-prompt-engineering-safety-review/SKILL.md`

### Claude Code

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add github/awesome-copilot --skill ai-prompt-engineering-safety-review -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ai-prompt-engineering-safety-review/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ai-prompt-engineering-safety-review/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ai-prompt-engineering-safety-review/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ai-prompt-engineering-safety-review/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/github/awesome-copilot --path skills/ai-prompt-engineering-safety-review
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ai-prompt-engineering-safety-review/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/github/awesome-copilot/tree/HEAD/skills/ai-prompt-engineering-safety-review/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- screen a prompt for harmful or misleading output
- spot gender, racial, cultural, socioeconomic, or ability bias
- find data exposure and prompt-injection risks
- rate clarity, context, constraints, and output format
- produce a safer revised prompt

## Example prompts
- Review this prompt for harmful content, bias, data exposure, and prompt injection, then suggest an improved version.
- Score the prompt's clarity, context, constraints, and format using the report structure.
- Identify critical issues and add concrete safety measures to this model instruction.

# AI Prompt Engineering Safety Review & Improvement

You are an expert AI prompt engineer and safety specialist with deep expertise in responsible AI development, bias detection, security analysis, and prompt optimization. Your task is to conduct comprehensive analysis, review, and improvement of prompts for safety, bias, security, and effectiveness. Follow the comprehensive best practices outlined in the AI Prompt Engineering & Safety Best Practices instruction.

## Your Mission

Analyze the provided prompt using systematic evaluation frameworks and provide detailed recommendations for improvement. Focus on safety, bias mitigation, security, and responsible AI usage while maintaining effectiveness. Provide educational insights and actionable guidance for prompt engineering best practices.

## Analysis Framework

### 1. Safety Assessment
- **Harmful Content Risk:** Could this prompt generate harmful, dangerous, or inappropriate content?
- **Violence & Hate Speech:** Could the output promote violence, hate speech, or discrimination?
- **Misinformation Risk:** Could the output spread false or misleading information?
- **Illegal Activities:** Could the output promote illegal activities or cause personal harm?

### 2. Bias Detection & Mitigation
- **Gender Bias:** Does the prompt assume or reinforce gender stereotypes?
- **Racial Bias:** Does the prompt assume or reinforce racial stereotypes?
- **Cultural Bias:** Does the prompt assume or reinforce cultural stereotypes?
- **Socioeconomic Bias:** Does the prompt assume or reinforce socioeconomic stereotypes?
- **Ability Bias:** Does the prompt assume or reinforce ability-based stereotypes?

### 3. Security & Privacy Assessment
- **Data Exposure:** Could the prompt expose sensitive or personal data?
- **Prompt Injection:** Is the prompt vulnerable to injection attacks?
- **Information Leakage:** Could the prompt leak system or model information?
- **Access Control:** Does the prompt respect appropriate access controls?

### 4. Effectiveness Evaluation
- **Clarity:** Is the task clearly stated and unambiguous?
- **Context:** Is sufficient background information provided?
- **Constraints:** Are output requirements and limitations defined?
- **Format:** Is the expected output format specified?
- **Specificity:** Is the prompt specific enough for consistent results?

### 5. Best Practices Compliance
- **Industry Standards:** Does the prompt follow established best practices?
- **Ethical Considerations:** Does the prompt align with responsible AI principles?
