## What it does

The skill hands your agent ready-made Istio and Linkerd manifests for east-west traffic between inference microservices. Inside are PeerAuthentication, AuthorizationPolicy, ServiceEntry, VirtualService and DestinationRule templates. The agent applies them to your cluster: strict mTLS between gateway, retriever, reranker and model, a 90/10 canary split, and circuit breaking for expensive GPU backends.

You need Istio installed with the default profile and a namespace with sidecar injection enabled. The skill walks through `istioctl install`, creating the `ai-inference` namespace, and verifying with `istioctl verify-install`. Without a running Istio the manifests simply won't apply, so check that first.

For external APIs like `api.openai.com` and `models.anthropic.com` there's a ServiceEntry with TLS and egress restricted by host. A separate retry budget covers streaming requests: long timeout, no retries on `/v1/stream`. This fits teams already running inference on Kubernetes who want traffic control without touching application code.

## Requirements
- Works with: Kubernetes

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill ai-inference-service-mesh -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ai-inference-service-mesh/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ai-inference-service-mesh/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill ai-inference-service-mesh -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ai-inference-service-mesh/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill ai-inference-service-mesh -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ai-inference-service-mesh/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills ai-inference-service-mesh
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ai-inference-service-mesh/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill ai-inference-service-mesh -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --path infrastructure/networking/ai-inference-service-mesh
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ai-inference-service-mesh/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill ai-inference-service-mesh -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills/tree/HEAD/infrastructure/networking/ai-inference-service-mesh/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- enforce strict mTLS between inference services
- roll out a new model version with a 90/10 canary split
- restrict egress to approved API endpoints only
- protect GPU backends from cascading failures with circuit breaking
- scope model-server access by service account

## Example prompts
- Set up strict mTLS for the ai-inference namespace and allow plaintext only on metrics port 9090
- Create a VirtualService for model-server with a 90/10 canary split between v1-stable and v2-experimental
- Add a ServiceEntry and DestinationRule for api.openai.com with TLS and a 50-connection limit

# AI Inference Service Mesh

Apply Istio/Linkerd mesh controls to secure and optimize east-west AI traffic across inference microservices.

## Why Mesh for AI

- Enforce mTLS between gateway, retriever, reranker, and model services
- Apply fine-grained traffic policies without app code changes
- Run progressive delivery for model-serving backends
- Observe latency hops for retrieval + generation chains
- Route inference requests by model version, tenant, or priority tier
- Protect expensive GPU-backed services from cascading failures

## Prerequisites

```bash
# Install Istio with production profile
istioctl install --set profile=default \
  --set meshConfig.accessLogFile=/dev/stdout \
  --set meshConfig.defaultConfig.holdApplicationUntilProxyStarts=true
# Label inference namespace for sidecar injection
kubectl create namespace ai-inference
kubectl label namespace ai-inference istio-injection=enabled
# Verify installation
istioctl verify-install
istioctl analyze -n ai-inference
```

## Core Patterns

### mTLS Strict Mode Cluster-Wide

```yaml
apiVersion: security.istio.io/v1beta1
kind: PeerAuthentication
metadata:
  name: default
  namespace: istio-system
spec:
  mtls:
    mode: STRICT
---
# Namespace-level override if needed for gradual rollout
apiVersion: security.istio.io/v1beta1
kind: PeerAuthentication
metadata:
  name: ai-inference-mtls
  namespace: ai-inference
spec:
  mtls:
    mode: STRICT
  portLevelMtls:
    # gRPC inference port
    8081:
      mode: STRICT
    # Prometheus metrics port - allow plaintext scraping
    9090:
      mode: PERMISSIVE
```

### AuthorizationPolicy Per Service Account

```yaml
apiVersion: security.istio.io/v1beta1
kind: AuthorizationPolicy
metadata:
  name: model-server-access
  namespace: ai-inference
spec:
  selector:
    matchLabels:
      app: model-server
  action: ALLOW
  rules:
  - from:
    - source:
        principals:
