# agentic-browser-testing

The skill covers goal-driven E2E testing: a browser agent reads a plain-language goal and explores the app through the accessibility tree, with no pre-written script.

## What it does

The skill lays out an approach where a browser agent (Playwright MCP or computer-use) takes a goal in words and finds the controls itself. Interaction is accessibility-tree-first: `browser_snapshot` returns roles, `ref` values and accessible names, while screenshots and pixel coordinates stay a scoped fallback for canvas.

Repeatability rests on a few levers: a pinned model, temperature 0, seeded data with a per-run reset, and hard limits on steps and wall time. The verdict lives outside the agent. Success is a checkable assertion against the final snapshot — expected text, a URL, plus a forbidden-state check — evaluated by your harness rather than the model, because an LLM grading its own run can report a pass that never happened.

Once a flow settles, the skill suggests promoting it to a scripted Playwright test with role-based locators. Keep the agent for exploration and churning UI; a stable critical path is cheaper as a script. Install goes through `npx skills add`, and you need model access plus a browser MCP server.

## Requirements
- Works with: Playwright

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill agentic-browser-testing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/agentic-browser-testing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/agentic-browser-testing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill agentic-browser-testing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/agentic-browser-testing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill agentic-browser-testing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/agentic-browser-testing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install petrkindlmann/qa-skills agentic-browser-testing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/agentic-browser-testing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill agentic-browser-testing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/petrkindlmann/qa-skills --path skills/agentic-browser-testing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/agentic-browser-testing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill agentic-browser-testing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- run a smoke test across the app without writing a script
- check a flow in UI that gets redesigned every week
- locate a control by role and name when selectors won't stick
- catch a false pass with a separate oracle
- turn a stable agent run into a scripted Playwright test

## Example prompts
- run an agentic browser test: goal is to log in and see the order number on /dashboard
- let the agent explore the app against the goal "place an order" and collect an evidence report
- make the run repeatable: pin the model, temperature 0, bound the steps, add a forbidden-state check

<objective>
Use a browser agent to explore a scoped natural-language goal and collect evidence from the
application. Keep stable, high-frequency critical paths scripted. A browser agent can adapt
its navigation when a page changes, but its exploration remains variable. A project-owned
oracle must independently establish the result before CI accepts it. Leave a bounded run,
a trace, a typed evidence report, and a path to a durable Playwright regression test.
</objective>

## Quick Route

| Situation | Go to |
|-----------|-------|
| Stand up a goal-driven run from scratch | Discovery + `references/setup.md` |
| Decide agentic vs scripted for a given flow | Fit: Intent-Driven vs Scripted |
| Agent passes one run, fails the next | Repeatability |
| "How does it click without screenshots?" | Interaction Model |
| Runs are slow / burning tokens | Cost and Latency |
| Agent reports false success | Success Assertion (the Oracle) |
| Flow is stable — make it permanent | Graduation → `references/graduation-and-ci.md` |
| Block a merge on the goal | CI Gating → `references/graduation-and-ci.md` |
| Canvas / no accessibility tree | Canvas Fallback → `references/graduation-and-ci.md` |
