# agent-xlsx

The skill gives your agent a CLI for reading, searching and writing Excel data. Handy when a spreadsheet lands in the repo and nobody remembers its layout.

## What it does

The skill covers `.xlsx`, `.xlsm`, `.xlsb`, `.xls` and `.ods` files through the `agent-xlsx` command. Output is JSON on stdout, shaped for an agent to parse; `--format csv` and `--format markdown` return raw text instead.

Under the hood it splits the work: Polars and fastexcel for data reads, openpyxl for metadata and writes, oletools for VBA. Screenshots go through three rendering engines in turn — Aspose, Excel, LibreOffice. A typical session opens with `probe`, which returns sheet names, dimensions, headers and a column map, then moves to `read`, `inspect`, `search`, `export`, `write` or `format` as needed.

The author suggests reaching for this instead of openpyxl or pandas scripts: reads are faster and the output is built for AI. No global install is required — `uvx agent-xlsx probe report.xlsx` runs it on the spot. Anything past the basic examples means reading `references/commands.md` in the repo first. Guessing at flags is how you get errors.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add apetta/agent-xlsx --skill agent-xlsx -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/agent-xlsx/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/agent-xlsx/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add apetta/agent-xlsx --skill agent-xlsx -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/agent-xlsx/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add apetta/agent-xlsx --skill agent-xlsx -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/agent-xlsx/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install apetta/agent-xlsx agent-xlsx
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/agent-xlsx/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add apetta/agent-xlsx --skill agent-xlsx -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/apetta/agent-xlsx --path skills/agent-xlsx
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/agent-xlsx/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add apetta/agent-xlsx --skill agent-xlsx -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/apetta/agent-xlsx/tree/HEAD/skills/agent-xlsx/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- open a spreadsheet and figure out what its columns mean
- search every sheet for a value in one call
- write formulas into a range of cells
- export a sheet to CSV or Markdown
- inspect VBA modules and catch formula errors

## Example prompts
- Probe report.xlsx with agent-xlsx and tell me the sheets and columns
- Search all sheets for "revenue" and show me the matching rows
- Write this matrix into A1:C3 and save it to a new file

Use when the user asks to: (1) Read, analyse, or search data in spreadsheets, (2) Write values or formulas to cells, (3) Inspect formatting, formulas, charts, or metadata, (4) Take screenshots or visual captures of sheets, (5) Export sheets to CSV/JSON/Markdown, (6) Manage sheets (create, rename, delete, copy, hide), (7) Analyse or execute VBA macros, (8) List/export embedded objects (charts, shapes, pictures), (9) Check for formula errors, or (10) Any task involving Excel file interaction. # agent-xlsx

XLSX CLI for AI agents. JSON to stdout by default (raw text for `--format csv|markdown`). Polars+fastexcel for data reads (7-10x faster than openpyxl), openpyxl for metadata/writes, three rendering engines for visual capture (Aspose → Excel → LibreOffice), oletools for VBA.

## Running

If `agent-xlsx` is not already installed, use `uvx` for zero-install execution:

```bash
uvx agent-xlsx probe report.xlsx
```

All examples below use `agent-xlsx` directly — prefix with `uvx` if not globally installed.

> **This file is a quick-start summary.** Before constructing any command beyond the basic examples shown here, **you must read [commands.md](references/commands.md)** for the full flag reference (types, defaults, edge cases, output schemas). For screenshot/recalc engine setup, read [backends.md](references/backends.md). Guessing at flags leads to errors — the reference is the source of truth.

## Workflow: Progressive Disclosure

Start lean, opt into detail:

```
probe (fast)  →  screenshot (visual)  →  read (data)  →  inspect (metadata)
```

**Always start with `probe`:**

```bash
agent-xlsx probe <file>                        # Sheet names, dims, headers, column_map
agent-xlsx probe <file> --types                # + column types, null counts
agent-xlsx probe <file> --brief                # Condensed: headers + column_map + types + nulls (minimal tokens)
agent-xlsx probe <file> --full                 # + types, sample(3), stats, date_summary
agent-xlsx probe <file> -s "Sales" --full      # Single-sheet deep-dive
agent-xlsx probe <file> --no-header            # Non-tabular: P&L, dashboards (cols as A,B,C)
agent-xlsx probe <file> --types --no-header    # + potential_headers auto-detection
```

Tabular probes return `column_map` — map headers to column letters for building ranges:

```json
{ "column_map": { "user_id": "A", "amount": "E" }, "last_col": "W" }
```

Non-tabular probes (`--no-header`) with `--types` return `potential_headers` — auto-detected header rows:

```json
{
  "potential_headers": [
