# pptx-generator

Generates PowerPoint decks by filling branded templates or building slides from scratch off a JSON spec. Useful when a report or pitch deck has to come out of a script, not a mouse.

## What it does

The skill runs in two modes. Template mode: `analyze-template.ts` pulls a text inventory out of a PPTX, you write `replacements.json` with tag-value pairs, and `generate-from-template.ts` swaps them in while keeping the corporate styling intact. There is also a slide-library route — `generate-thumbnails.ts` lists what a file contains, you pick slide numbers in `selections.json`, and the same generator stitches them into a new deck.

Scratch mode skips templates entirely. You describe the deck in `spec.json`: title, author, slides, elements with `x`, `y`, `w`, `h` coordinates and options like `fontSize`, `bold`, `color`, `align`. Text blocks and tables are supported. Then `generate-scratch.ts` writes the file.

Deno is required, and the scripts run with `--allow-read` and `--allow-write`. No Deno means nothing runs, so check that first. Animations and transitions get limited support, the older `.ppt` format is not accepted, and viewing finished decks is not what this is for — open those in PowerPoint.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill pptx-generator -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/pptx-generator/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/pptx-generator/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill pptx-generator -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/pptx-generator/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill pptx-generator -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/pptx-generator/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jwynia/agent-skills pptx-generator
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/pptx-generator/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill pptx-generator -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jwynia/agent-skills --path skills/general/document-processing/presentation/pptx-generator
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/pptx-generator/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill pptx-generator -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/jwynia/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/general/document-processing/presentation/pptx-generator/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build a quarterly report from a branded template
- fill `{{PLACEHOLDERS}}` without editing slides by hand
- assemble a pitch deck from approved library slides
- extract text and structure from someone else's PPTX
- turn an API response into a presentation via JSON

## Example prompts
- Analyze `corporate-template.pptx` and list the tags I can replace
- Combine slides 1, 5, 12 and 3 from `slide-library.pptx`, title it "Custom Presentation"
- Generate a presentation from `spec.json` into `output.pptx`

# PPTX Generator

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when:
- Creating presentations programmatically from data or specifications
- Populating branded templates with dynamic content while preserving corporate styling
- Extracting text and structure from existing PPTX files for analysis
- Combining slides from a library of approved templates
- Automating presentation generation workflows

Do NOT use this skill when:
- User wants to open/view presentations (use native PowerPoint or viewer)
- Complex animations or transitions are required (limited support)
- Working with older .ppt format (PPTX only)

## Prerequisites

- Deno installed (https://deno.land/)
- Input PPTX files for template-based operations
- JSON specification for scratch generation

## Quick Start

### Two Modes of Operation

1. **Template Mode**: Modify existing branded templates
   - Analyze & Replace: Find `{{PLACEHOLDERS}}` and replace with content
   - Slide Library: Select and combine slides from a template library

2. **Scratch Mode**: Create presentations from nothing using JSON specifications

## Instructions

### Mode 1: Template-Based Generation

#### Step 1a: Analyze the Template

Extract text inventory to understand what can be replaced:

```bash
deno run --allow-read scripts/analyze-template.ts corporate-template.pptx > inventory.json
```

**Output** (inventory.json):
```json
{
  "filename": "corporate-template.pptx",
  "slideCount": 10,
  "textElements": [
    {
      "slideNumber": 1,
      "shapeId": "shape-2",
      "shapeName": "Title 1",
      "placeholderType": "ctrTitle",
      "position": { "x": 1.5, "y": 2.0, "w": 7.0, "h": 1.2 },
      "paragraphs": [
        { "text": "{{TITLE}}", "fontSize": 44, "bold": true }
      ]
    }
  ]
}
```

#### Step 1b: Create Replacement Specification

Create `replacements.json`:
```json
{
  "textReplacements": [
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the c21b291ba343533c tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
