# agent-regression-evals

Tests agent prompt, model, or tool updates against a baseline using statistics. It helps teams verify whether drops in pass rates reflect true regressions.

## What it does

The skill audits agent behavior changes without invoking external LLMs or APIs. It relies on three deterministic Python scripts using the standard library. First, `scripts/trajectory_checker.py` evaluates tool-call sequences against a JSON specification. A single call to a forbidden tool triggers exit code 4.

Evaluating agents requires repeated executions. Single runs are not dependable. The `scripts/flake_detector.py` script computes `pass@k` and `pass^k` metrics to isolate flaky test cases from stable ones. If a test case has fewer than 3 trials, the detector halts immediately.

Final gating runs through `scripts/regression_gate.py`. It calculates per-case averages before testing paired differences with a 95% confidence interval and an exact McNemar test. The gate blocks the CI pipeline when a critical case fails or when test cases disappear from the candidate dataset.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Plugin marketplace**
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin marketplace add alirezarezvani/claude-skills
```
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin install agent-regression-evals@claude-code-skills
```
This installs the whole agent-regression-evals plugin with all its skills

2. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alirezarezvani/claude-skills --skill agent-regression-evals -a claude-code
```

3. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/agent-regression-evals/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/agent-regression-evals/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/agent-regression-evals/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/agent-regression-evals/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install alirezarezvani/claude-skills agent-regression-evals
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/agent-regression-evals/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/alirezarezvani/claude-skills --path engineering/agent-regression-evals/skills/agent-regression-evals
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/agent-regression-evals/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- grade tool-call trajectories against JSON specs
- detect flaky eval runs using `pass@k` and `pass^k`
- run paired statistical tests between candidate and baseline
- block pull requests on critical-case regressions or forbidden tool calls

## Example prompts
- Compare `baseline.jsonl` against `candidate.jsonl` with the regression gate script
- Check tool-call trajectories in `candidate.jsonl` using the spec in `cases.json`
- Run flake detection on `candidate.jsonl` with 3 trials per case

description: Use when an agent, prompt, model or tool change needs proof it did not make the agent worse — setting up a regression eval suite, deciding whether a pass-rate drop is real or noise, grading tool-call trajectories, finding flaky eval cases, or wiring an eval gate into CI that blocks the merge. Runs repeated trials, reports pass@k and pass^k, compares candidate to baseline with paired statistics, and refuses to pass a dropped case, a critical-case regression, or a forbidden tool call.

# Agent Regression Evals — prove the change did not make it worse

> **Portability:** 3 stdlib scripts, no APIs, no LLM calls. You run the agent; these grade, count and gate.

"Pass rate went from 82% to 79%" is not a finding until you know whether three
points is outside the noise. Agents are non-deterministic, so one trial per
case cannot tell a regression from a coin flip, and a final answer can be right
while the path to it called a tool it never should have.

## Workflow

```bash
# 0 - Run every case k times (k >= 3) on baseline and candidate, from a clean
#     environment per trial. Write one JSONL row per trial:
#     {"case_id": "refund-lookup", "trial": 1, "passed": true, "critical": true,
#      "cost_usd": 0.012, "trajectory": [{"tool": "get_order", "args": {...}}]}
# 1 - Grade the path where the path matters (safety, required lookups).
python scripts/trajectory_checker.py --spec cases.json --results candidate.jsonl
# 2 - Separate flaky cases from stable ones before trusting any comparison.
python scripts/flake_detector.py --results candidate.jsonl --k 3 --quarantine-out q.json
# 3 - Gate: paired per-case comparison against baseline. Exit 4 blocks the merge.
python scripts/regression_gate.py --baseline baseline.jsonl --candidate candidate.jsonl --quarantine q.json
```

Step 1 uses match modes `strict | unordered | subset | superset`. Default to
`superset` (required steps present, harmless exploration allowed); grade the
outcome, not the path, unless order is the requirement. `forbidden` tools block
in every mode.

Step 2 reports **pass@k** (succeeds at least once in k) and **pass^k** (succeeds
all k times). A user meets every trial, so pass^k is the reliability number.
Cases marked critical are never quarantine candidates.
