## What it does

The skill treats a command line as an interface for three audiences at once: humans, agents and orchestrators. Each gets its own channel — `stdout` for machines, `stderr` for people, exit codes for systems. A tool that serves only one of them counts as incomplete here.

It walks the full interaction loop: obtaining a token, setting trusted environment variables, loading skills, querying the schema, previewing with `--dry-run`, executing, parsing the result, then recovering from an exit code and error object. The principles cover structured JSON output, progressive self-description through `--help` and `schema <resource.action>`, and graduated visibility for destructive commands. Supporting files include `references/design-patterns.md` and `references/hybrid-mcp-cli.md`.

The CLI is expected to detect its own reader: check whether `stdout` is a TTY, default to JSON when it is not, and let `--format json|table` or `NO_COLOR` override that. Making agents pass `--format json` every time is called out as a bad idea — they forget, and the run quietly returns prose instead of data. Install runs through `npx skills add`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Agents365-ai/365-skills --skill agent-native-design -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/agent-native-design/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/agent-native-design/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Agents365-ai/365-skills --skill agent-native-design -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/agent-native-design/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Agents365-ai/365-skills --skill agent-native-design -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/agent-native-design/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Agents365-ai/365-skills agent-native-design
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/agent-native-design/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Agents365-ai/365-skills --skill agent-native-design -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Agents365-ai/365-skills --path plugins/agent-native-design/skills/agent-native-design
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/agent-native-design/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Agents365-ai/365-skills --skill agent-native-design -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Agents365-ai/365-skills/tree/HEAD/plugins/agent-native-design/skills/agent-native-design/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- check whether an existing CLI is agent-friendly
- turn a human-oriented tool into a machine-readable one
- define the JSON output and exit code contract
- add request previews with `--dry-run`
- split destructive commands from safe ones by tier

## Example prompts
- Review this CLI and tell me whether it is agent-native
- Design a CLI for this API that an AI agent can use reliably
- Help me define schema introspection, dry-run and exit code semantics

# agent-native-design

## Purpose

This skill helps analyze, design, and refactor command-line tools so they can reliably serve **humans**, **AI agents**, and **orchestration systems** at the same time.

It is not a skill for merely *using* a CLI. It is a skill for designing and reviewing a CLI as an **agent-native interface**.

The skill focuses on four goals:

1. Make CLI behavior predictable for AI agents.
2. Make CLI output readable and recoverable for humans.
3. Make CLI execution manageable for systems and orchestrators.
4. Define a complete interaction loop from authentication to error routing.

---

## When to use this skill

Use this skill when the user wants to:

* evaluate whether an existing CLI is agent-friendly
* redesign a CLI to better support AI agents
* convert an API or SDK into an agent-native CLI
* review help output, schema design, exit codes, or JSON contracts
* design dry-run, auth delegation, or safety boundaries
* generate CLI skills, docs, or interface conventions from schema
* refactor a human-oriented CLI into a machine-friendly one
* define how a CLI should interact with an agent runtime

Typical prompts include:

* "Review this CLI and tell me whether it is agent-native."
* "Design a CLI for this API that an AI agent can use reliably."
* "Refactor this tool so stdout is machine-readable and safer for agents."
* "Help me define schema introspection, dry-run, and exit code semantics."

## When not to use this skill

Do not use this skill when the user only wants:

* help running a specific command
