## What it does

The skill answers one question: where should your agent run on AWS. Scoring is deterministic — scripts turn your answers into points and name a runtime, while the conversation shifts to match how technical you are. Work moves through phases: intake, discover, clarify, confirm, design, estimate, generate, migration-plan, poc. Each phase file opens with a YAML block describing its inputs, fragments and gates. Run state lives under `.agent-advisor/`, in a directory like `.agent-advisor/0630-1430/`.

A sidebar branch, `add_capabilities`, attaches AgentCore services to an agent already running on AWS: memory, gateway, identity, policy, observability. No runtime scoring happens there; it writes `capabilities-recommendation.md` instead. Temporal gets its own treatment. Temporal Workflow code is never rewritten into Step Functions, and moving workers plus the Temporal Cloud versus self-hosted call route into the `migrate` branch.

You need `uv` before anything runs — check with `uv --version`. If it is missing, install it from the official guide and stop; scoring will not work without it. The skill also expects at least one agentic component. Plain services, batch jobs, HTTP endpoints and non-agent Temporal Activities fall outside its scope and get redirected to `gcp-to-aws`, `heroku-to-aws` or `llm-to-bedrock`. For a non-interactive run you can drop in a `seed.json`; it outranks every other answer source, which is what keeps a repeated score comparable.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill agent-advisor -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/agent-advisor/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/agent-advisor/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill agent-advisor -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/agent-advisor/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill agent-advisor -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/agent-advisor/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws agent-advisor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/agent-advisor/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill agent-advisor -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --path plugins/aws-startup-advisor/skills/agent-advisor
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/agent-advisor/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill agent-advisor -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws/tree/HEAD/plugins/aws-startup-advisor/skills/agent-advisor/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- choose between AgentCore, ECS, EKS and Lambda for an agent
- compare AgentCore with Lambda MicroVMs
- plan a move of existing agents to AWS
- add memory, gateway or observability to an agent on AWS
- decide between Temporal Cloud and self-hosted

## Example prompts
- Which runtime should I use for my agent on AWS?
- I have an agent idea — what do I build?
- Draft a migration plan for my agents on AWS

description: "Entry point for AI-agent work on AWS: pick a runtime, plan a migration for existing workloads, and build an executable POC — one phased flow. Triggers on: which runtime for my agent, AgentCore vs ECS vs EKS vs Lambda, AgentCore vs Lambda MicroVMs, deploy an AI agent on AWS, agent architecture on AWS, I have an agent idea what do I build, move/migrate my agents to AWS, agent migration plan, add AgentCore services (memory, gateway, identity, policy, observability) to an agent already on AWS, Temporal on AWS (migrate/run Temporal workers on AWS, a service orchestrated by Temporal, Temporal Cloud vs self-hosted). Temporal Workflow code is never rewritten into Step Functions. Requires at least one agentic component — a purely non-agent system (plain services, batch jobs, HTTP endpoints, non-agent Temporal Activities) is out of scope, redirected to gcp-to-aws / heroku-to-aws / llm-to-bedrock. Not for: compute/data migration with no AI agent; pure LLM SDK rewrite (use llm-to-bedrock); per-model pricing."

# AWS Agent Advisor

Helps startups decide how and where to run AI agents on AWS. Deterministic scoring
recommends a runtime; the conversation adapts to the user's technical background.

## Definitions

- **"Load"** = Read the file with the Read tool and follow it. Do not summarize or skip.
- **`$RUN_DIR`** = the run directory under `.agent-advisor/` (e.g. `.agent-advisor/0630-1430/`),
  created in Intake.
- **`$PLUGIN`** = `${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}` (the installed plugin root). On Claude Code this token
  substitutes inline. **If `${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}` does not resolve** (some Cursor/Codex builds,
  or a literal `${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}` string showing up in a path error), fall back to the
  skill's own directory: this SKILL.md lives at `<plugin>/skills/agent-advisor/SKILL.md`, so the
  engine and its data are all inside this skill — scripts at `./scripts/...`, runtime profiles at
  `./references/runtimes/...`, and decision refs at `./references/decision-refs/...` relative to
  it. Prefer `${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/skills/agent-advisor/...`; use the relative fallback only when
  it fails to resolve.
