## What it does

This skill provides ready-to-paste guidance for Adobe After Effects: expressions, controller rigs, MOGRT templates, export decisions, and performance troubleshooting. It returns instructions and code assets rather than a rendered file.

Its material is split across `references/expressions.md`, `references/export-recipes.md`, `references/performance-triage.md`, and `references/project-hygiene.md`. The `scripts/` folder includes `.jsx` files for batch layer renaming, sequential offsets, and applying an effect to layers.

The skill explains the difference between Render Queue and Adobe Media Encoder, including why transparent H.264 output gets a black background. That means H.264 should not be sought in Render Queue: use Adobe Media Encoder for MP4, and use ProRes 4444 or PNG/TIFF sequences when alpha is required.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/motion-design-skills --skill after-effects -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/after-effects/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/after-effects/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/motion-design-skills --skill after-effects -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/after-effects/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/motion-design-skills --skill after-effects -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/after-effects/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install iart-ai/motion-design-skills after-effects
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/after-effects/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/motion-design-skills --skill after-effects -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/iart-ai/motion-design-skills --path skills/after-effects
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/after-effects/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/motion-design-skills --skill after-effects -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/iart-ai/motion-design-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/after-effects/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- write a `wiggle` or `loopOut` expression
- build a controller rig with a Slider or null layer
- choose an export codec with alpha support
- diagnose slow previews or renders
- relink missing footage and batch-rename layers

## Example prompts
- "Write a `wiggle` expression for a layer position and tell me where to paste it."
- "Why does my transparent comp get a black background after H.264 export?"
- "Create a `.jsx` script to batch-rename layers in After Effects."

# After Effects

After Effects is GUI software, so this skill delivers knowledge and ready-to-paste assets — expressions, rig setups, export checklists, diagnostic flows, naming schemes, and ExtendScript — rather than a rendered file. It is a hub covering four domains; route to the matching reference for depth and complete recipes.

## Routing

| If the user wants to… | Go to |
|---|---|
| Write/debug an expression, rig sliders & nulls, build a MOGRT, export to Lottie | `references/expressions.md` (deep cookbook in `references/expression-library.md`) |
| Choose a codec/container, export with alpha, fix a black background, set bitrate, recover H.264 | `references/export-recipes.md` |
| Fix slow/laggy previews, slow renders, crashes, freezes, out-of-memory | `references/performance-triage.md` |
| Organize the project, relink missing footage, set naming/folders, batch-automate with .jsx | `references/project-hygiene.md` |

The `.jsx` automation scripts live in `scripts/`.

## Expressions & rigging

Expressions are JavaScript evaluated on the property they are pasted on; `value` is that property's value, `time` is comp time in seconds, and `index`, `thisLayer`, `thisComp` are in scope. An expression overrides keyframes unless it incorporates `value`.

```js
wiggle(2, 30);            // 2 wiggles/sec, amplitude 30 (property units)
loopOut("cycle");         // repeat keyframed range forever; "pingpong" / "offset" / "continue"
seedRandom(index, true);  // stable-but-unique per layer (timeless) before random()/wiggle()
thisComp.layer("Lead").transform.position.valueAtTime(time - 0.2 * index);  // staggered echo
```

Inertial bounce (overshoot/settle after the last keyframe) and the full loop/wiggle/rigging set are in `references/expressions.md`.
