## What it does

The skill walks through the whole setup. First it assesses product fit and audience size, then moves to commission structure, partner materials, recruitment, and monitoring. The CPS model means you pay only when a sale happens, so spend tracks results. For SaaS it suggests pay-per-sale or pay-per-lead, with recurring payouts on subscription renewals.

Inside are tables for commission models, key terms like cookie duration and attribution, promotion channels, and risks. Fraud gets its own section: fake clicks, self-referrals, fake conversions. Brand bidding is covered too, where a partner buys ads on your brand terms and earns commission on traffic you already owned. That one is worth banning in your terms before launch and watching paid search for.

The skill reads a root `contextus.md` when it exists and loads only the modules this task needs. Without it, it works from project material or user-provided facts and asks for what's missing. Signup pages are handled by a separate skill, `affiliate-page-generator`; this one stays on strategy.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill affiliate-marketing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/affiliate-marketing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/affiliate-marketing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill affiliate-marketing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/affiliate-marketing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill affiliate-marketing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/affiliate-marketing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install kostja94/marketing-skills affiliate-marketing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/affiliate-marketing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill affiliate-marketing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/kostja94/marketing-skills --path skills/channels/partnerships/affiliate-marketing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/affiliate-marketing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill affiliate-marketing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/kostja94/marketing-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/channels/partnerships/affiliate-marketing/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick a commission model for a SaaS subscription
- set cookie duration and minimum payout
- build a list of channels for recruiting partners
- catch fake clicks and self-referrals
- ban partners from bidding on your brand terms

## Example prompts
- help me plan an affiliate program for our SaaS
- should we use pay-per-sale or pay-per-lead?
- review our program terms for fraud and brand bidding risks

# Channels: Affiliate

Guides affiliate marketing strategy for AI/SaaS products. Affiliate marketing uses a CPS (Cost Per Sale) model—pay only when sales occur. ROI typically 5:1 to 10:1; CAC 40%–50% lower than paid ads.

**When invoking**: On **first use**, if helpful, open with 1–2 sentences on what this skill covers and why it matters, then provide the main output. On **subsequent use** or when the user asks to skip, go directly to the main output.

## Initial Assessment

**Project context:** Read root `contextus.md` when present and load only the modules relevant to this task. Without Contextus, use available project material or user-provided facts and ask for missing information; do not create a parallel context system.

Identify:
1. **Product type**: SaaS, AI tool, subscription
2. **Commission model**: Pay-per-sale, pay-per-lead, pay-per-click
3. **Target affiliates**: Content creators, publishers, coupon sites

## Commission Models

| Model | Use | Typical Rate |
|-------|-----|--------------|
| **Pay-per-sale** | Most common; pay on conversion | 10%–20% |
| **Pay-per-lead** | Lead gen (signup, form fill) | $5–50/lead |
| **Pay-per-click** | Rare; risk of abuse | $0.01–10.50/click |

For SaaS: Prefer pay-per-sale or pay-per-lead. Recurring commissions for subscriptions.

## Key Terms

| Term | Definition |
|------|------------|
| **Cookie duration** | Attribution window (typically 30–90 days) |
| **Recurring commission** | Ongoing % from subscription renewals |
| **Sub-affiliate** | Affiliates who recruit other affiliates |
| **Performance bonus** | Extra reward when affiliate hits sales targets |
| **Attribution** | Linking sale to correct affiliate |

## Promotion Channels

- **Content creators**: Bloggers, YouTubers, podcasters, social influencers
- **Publishers**: Media, niche sites, email newsletters
- **Coupon/cashback**: Price-sensitive users; see **discount-marketing-strategy** for code strategy
- **Professional affiliates**: Agencies managing multiple programs
- **Communities**: Facebook Groups, Discord, Reddit, forums
- **Existing customers**: Word-of-mouth via referral rewards
