# aesthetic-instrument

Defines twelve rigid interface rules for technical dashboards: a five-step dark ladder, a green accent, and Geist typography. Built for great_cto surfaces and reports.

## What it does

The skill sets UI conventions for developer control surfaces, taken directly from `packages/board` and `great_cto-site/styles.css`. It specifies twelve inspectable rules. Elevation comes from five surface background steps between `#0a0e0c` and `#1e272c` rather than drop shadows. Exactly one accent color `#00d97e` is permitted, appearing as a 1px border or a 3px active navigation indicator.

Typography splits by purpose. Geist handles navigation and general prose, while Geist Mono renders machine truth: task identifiers and file paths. If an operator would copy and paste the string, it belongs in mono. Numerals require `tabular-nums` so shifting figures do not cause visual jitter. A dash indicates unmeasured data, keeping zero reserved for measured counts.

Desktop density is intentional. Control heights sit at 30–32px for mouse input. That breaks mobile touch usability where targets require at least 44px. Font files cover only the Latin character set in 52 KB, so Cyrillic text drops straight to system fonts.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add avelikiy/great_cto --skill aesthetic-instrument -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/aesthetic-instrument/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/aesthetic-instrument/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add avelikiy/great_cto --skill aesthetic-instrument -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/aesthetic-instrument/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add avelikiy/great_cto --skill aesthetic-instrument -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/aesthetic-instrument/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install avelikiy/great_cto aesthetic-instrument
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/aesthetic-instrument/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add avelikiy/great_cto --skill aesthetic-instrument -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/avelikiy/great_cto --path skills/aesthetic-instrument
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/aesthetic-instrument/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add avelikiy/great_cto --skill aesthetic-instrument -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/avelikiy/great_cto/tree/HEAD/skills/aesthetic-instrument/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- style a new dashboard screen according to great_cto design constraints
- separate readable interface labels from copyable machine IDs using Geist and Geist Mono
- build UI depth with a five-step dark surface ladder instead of drop shadows
- format tabular numerals and separate unmeasured dashes from zero counts

## Example prompts
- Build a new status card following the aesthetic-instrument design rules.
- Review my CSS against the twelve rules in aesthetic-instrument.
- Format this data table with Geist Mono for machine IDs and tabular numerals for counts.

# The instrument panel

A committed aesthetic in the sense of
[`skills/committed-aesthetic/SKILL.md`](../committed-aesthetic/SKILL.md): every
rule below is checkable, and every value was **read out of the source** —
`packages/board/public/index.html` and `great_cto-site/styles.css` — rather than
chosen to write this document.

The subject is an instrument, not a brochure. One person reads it to decide what a
machine may do next. Everything below follows from that.

## Rule 0 — this is the CATEGORY default, and calling it ours was wrong

The first version of this file opened "this is ours, not a default". Measured
against a real corpus on 2026-09-01, that is false, and the correction matters
more than anything below it.

Refero's top ten styles for a dark technical developer landing describe:
near-black canvas (Depot, Warp, Supabase, Trunk, Checkly, Cron, Linear, Eraser),
depth from surface shifts or borders **rather than shadows** (Warp, Supabase,
Trunk, Linear), and **one green accent used sparingly** (Depot, Warp, Supabase,
Trunk). Four of them are described with the words "instrument panel", "command
center" or "cockpit".

Every one of those is a rule below. This aesthetic is not great_cto's identity —
it is what every infrastructure product looks like, and this file codified the
modal choice and labelled it a differentiator. A skill that does that produces
template work while asserting it does not.

**What follows is still correct, and its correctness is functional, not
distinctive.** Dark, dense, one accent, tabular numerals and a dash that is not a
nought are right for a surface one operator reads all day to decide what a machine
