## What it does

The skill answers frontend questions about apps that connect to bots built with the Botpress ADK. It covers authentication patterns, type-safe API calls, client configuration and generated types. Docs live in `./references/`: `authentication.md`, `botpress-client.md`, `calling-actions.md`, `type-generation.md`, plus files on architecture, project setup, the service layer and realtime updates.

Auth runs on Personal Access Tokens generated in Botpress Cloud. Tokens go into cookies rather than localStorage, and login uses an OAuth redirect to `cli-login` with a callback at `/auth/callback?pat=...`. The client is cached in a Zustand store with dynamic keys, and there are separate workspace-scoped and bot-scoped variants. ADK writes types into `.adk/` during `adk dev` or a build, and you pull them in with triple-slash references. If TypeScript cannot find your action types, check that generation ran and the reference is still there.

Action calls go through `client.callAction()` with types from `BotActionDefinitions`. `useMutation` handles loading states and errors, and optimistic updates keep the UI responsive before the server answers. React Query and Zustand are recommended, not required.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add botpress/skills --skill adk-frontend -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/adk-frontend/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/adk-frontend/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add botpress/skills --skill adk-frontend -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/adk-frontend/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add botpress/skills --skill adk-frontend -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/adk-frontend/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install botpress/skills adk-frontend
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/adk-frontend/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add botpress/skills --skill adk-frontend -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/botpress/skills --path skills/adk-frontend
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/adk-frontend/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add botpress/skills --skill adk-frontend -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/botpress/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/adk-frontend/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- wire up PAT auth with an OAuth redirect
- cache the Botpress client and reuse it across screens
- import generated action types into the frontend
- call a bot action and handle the error path
- show an optimistic update before the server responds

## Example prompts
- How do I set up PAT authentication in my React app for a Botpress ADK bot?
- Show me the Zustand store pattern for the Botpress client
- How do I reference the generated action types from `.adk/` with a triple-slash directive?

# ADK Frontend Integration

Use this skill when users ask questions about building frontend applications that connect to Botpress ADK bots. This covers authentication patterns, type-safe API calls, client configuration, and integrating generated types.

## What is ADK Frontend Integration?

When you build a bot with the Botpress ADK, you often need a frontend application that interacts with it. This skill provides production-tested patterns for:

- **Authentication** - Cookie-based PAT storage with OAuth flow
- **Client Management** - Zustand store pattern for client caching and reuse
- **Type Generation** - Using ADK-generated types for full type safety
- **Action Calls** - Calling bot actions with proper error handling and optimistic updates

### Key Technologies

- **@botpress/client** - Official TypeScript client for Botpress API
- **Triple-slash references** - TypeScript pattern for importing generated types
- **React Query** - For mutations and cache management (optional but recommended)
- **Zustand** - For client state management

## When to Use This Skill

Activate this skill when users ask frontend-related questions like:

### Authentication Questions

- "How do I authenticate with Botpress from my frontend?"
- "What are Personal Access Tokens (PATs)?"
- "Should I use cookies or localStorage for tokens?"
- "How do I implement OAuth login flow?"
- "How do I protect routes based on authentication?"
- "How do I handle token expiration?"

### Client Setup Questions

- "How do I initialize the Botpress client?"
- "What's the best way to manage multiple client instances?"
- "Why use a client store?"
- "How do I create workspace-scoped vs bot-scoped clients?"
- "What's the difference between regular client and Zai client?"

### Type Generation Questions

- "How do I get types for my bot's actions?"
- "What are triple-slash references?"
- "How do I import generated types?"
- "Where are the .adk type files?"
- "How do I keep types in sync between bot and frontend?"
- "Why can't TypeScript find my action types?"

### Calling Actions Questions

- "How do I call a bot action from my frontend?"
- "What's the syntax for client.callAction()?"
- "How do I handle errors when calling actions?"
- "How do I implement optimistic updates?"
- "How do I chain multiple action calls?"
- "How do I use React Query with bot actions?"
