## What it does

The skill walks an agent through the model-inputs-outputs shape of a dbt unit test. You name a model, the agent builds mock data for each upstream node it depends on, then fills the `expect` block with the rows the model should produce. Fixture data can use several formats; the default is a YAML dictionary.

Bundled references cover every required and optional YAML key, plus examples. Separate files handle incremental models, ephemeral dependencies, versioned models, project and environment variables, and introspective macros. Warehouse notes for BigQuery, Redshift, Postgres, Snowflake and Spark explain data type handling and known caveats.

Unit tests need the direct parent models to already exist in the warehouse. When they are missing or their schema is stale, the skill suggests building them with `dbt run --select +my_model --exclude my_model --empty`. That flag overwrites models with zero-row versions, so any data inside is gone — worth checking before you run it. Skip the step entirely if you use `dbt build --select my_model`, which runs the whole pipeline including unit tests. Built-in functions like `min()` are not worth testing; the warehouse provider already covers them.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dbt-labs/dbt-agent-skills --skill adding-dbt-unit-test -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/adding-dbt-unit-test/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/adding-dbt-unit-test/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dbt-labs/dbt-agent-skills --skill adding-dbt-unit-test -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/adding-dbt-unit-test/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dbt-labs/dbt-agent-skills --skill adding-dbt-unit-test -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/adding-dbt-unit-test/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dbt-labs/dbt-agent-skills adding-dbt-unit-test
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/adding-dbt-unit-test/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dbt-labs/dbt-agent-skills --skill adding-dbt-unit-test -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dbt-labs/dbt-agent-skills --path skills/dbt/skills/adding-dbt-unit-test
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/adding-dbt-unit-test/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dbt-labs/dbt-agent-skills --skill adding-dbt-unit-test -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- write a unit test for a model with window functions and `case when` branches
- lock down a bug fix so it cannot regress
- build mock inputs for a multi-join transformation
- test logic before a significant refactor
- cover an incremental model or an ephemeral dependency

## Example prompts
- add a unit test for the orders model with mocked stg_orders data
- write a unit test for the bug fix in the customers model
- create a unit test for the incremental events model

## What are unit tests in dbt

dbt unit tests validate SQL modeling logic on static inputs before materializing in production. If any unit test for a model fails, dbt will not materialize that model.

## When to use

You should unit test a model:
- Adding Model-Input-Output scenarios for the intended functionality of the model as well as edge cases to prevent regressions if the model logic is changed at a later date.
- Verifying that a bug fix solves a bug report for an existing dbt model.

More examples:
- When your SQL contains complex logic:
    - Regex
    - Date math
    - Window functions
    - `case when` statements when there are many `when`s
    - Truncation
```
