## What it does

The skill starts with `/add-ui` and covers both new screens and redesigns. It gathers context first: framework, styling system, insertion point, and whether you want a section, page, flow, shell, or standalone component. It reads the stack from your codebase when it can and only asks about what the files do not show.

From there it produces five directions that differ in layout, hierarchy, density, and interaction model. Swapping the palette or border radius does not count as a new direction. On a redesign the default is to keep the recognizable bones — content blocks, section order, familiar affordances — and move the visual system through typography, color, copy framing, and spacing. If one variant pushes further on structure, it gets labeled as the stretch option rather than quietly replacing the page.

Before generating anything, the skill loads `$frontend-design` for its design principles and context gathering protocol, and it requires `$setup` first when no design context exists yet. In React projects it consults component library integration to decide whether the artifact should be led by primitives, reusable patterns, or block accelerators. Previews are built as real components and routes, not DOM injection from a browser extension — that route is fragile and leaves no maintainable source.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill add-ui -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/add-ui/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/add-ui/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill add-ui -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/add-ui/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill add-ui -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/add-ui/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aladicf/better-web-ui add-ui
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/add-ui/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill add-ui -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aladicf/better-web-ui --path skills/add-ui
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/add-ui/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill add-ui -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- generate five landing page directions and compare them
- redesign a pricing section without losing its recognizable blocks
- pick a style for a new project with no brand system yet
- scaffold a dashboard shell that matches the existing stack
- rework a login screen while keeping the familiar fields

## Example prompts
- /add-ui add a pricing section with three tiers, billed monthly
- /add-ui redesign the navbar, keep the structure and links as they are
- /add-ui build a login page for our Tailwind project

## MANDATORY PREPARATION

Users start this workflow with `/add-ui`. `add-ui` is the canonical skill name in this repository. Some hosts may expose a friendly `/add` alias, but docs, wrappers, and source files should continue to refer to the skill as `add-ui`.

Once this skill is active, load $frontend-design — it contains the design principles, anti-patterns, and the **Context Gathering Protocol**. Follow that protocol before proceeding. If no design context exists yet, you MUST load $setup first.

When the request is for a brand-new landing page, marketing page, or several distinct directions and the aesthetic is still open, use the approved style-selection rules in `frontend-design`'s [design directions](../frontend-design/reference/design-directions.md). Choose directions that fit the product idea and brand context instead of inventing vague vibe labels.

When working inside an existing project with an established visual system, preserve that system first and make the options feel distinct without quietly rebranding the product.

Also gather the smallest set of implementation details needed to generate usable code:

- framework / runtime (React, Next.js, Vue, plain HTML, etc.)
- styling system (Tailwind, CSS modules, styled-components, vanilla CSS, etc.)
- target insertion point (new route, existing page, shared component folder, design system area)
- whether this is a brand-new artifact or a redesign of an existing one
- whether the user wants a section, page, flow, shell, or standalone component
- quality bar (quick draft, production-ready, flagship)

If the request is a redesign of an existing artifact, also identify:

- which parts must remain recognizable (content blocks, section order, interaction model, familiar affordances, brand cues)
- which parts are flexible (style, colors, copywriting, typography, media treatment, density, detail language)
- whether the user wants mostly safe evolution, a broad explore-and-compare pass, or one or two stretch directions

Use this precedence order when deciding implementation defaults:

1. detect and match the existing project's styling and component libraries first

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 9f757b7410a329a9 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
