# add-app-to-server

A skill that gives the tools of a running MCP server an interactive HTML view. Useful when a tool returns a table, a chart or a PDF that reads badly as plain text.

## What it does

The skill takes a server that already exposes tools and pairs each one with an HTML resource. Text-only clients keep working, the view is an extra layer. A tool gets linked to a resource through `_meta.ui.resourceUri`, and the host opens that resource in a sandboxed iframe when the tool is called.

Inventory first, code second. The skill walks through the registered tools and asks which ones earn a view: tables and metrics over time yes, a confirmation like a created file stays text. Then comes the wiring: `@modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps` plus `zod@^4.2.0`, a Vite build with `vite-plugin-singlefile` down to one HTML file, an entry such as `mcp-app.html`, and scripts where `build:ui` runs before `build:server`. Working examples are cloned from the SDK repo at the tag of the current version.

The sharp edge is the SDK version. ext-apps 2.x expects the split base packages at `^2.0.0`, so a server still importing `@modelcontextprotocol/sdk` v1 needs its imports and handler schemas migrated first. Check `package.json` before writing UI code, not after the build breaks.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps --skill add-app-to-server -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/add-app-to-server/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/add-app-to-server/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps --skill add-app-to-server -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/add-app-to-server/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps --skill add-app-to-server -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/add-app-to-server/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps add-app-to-server
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/add-app-to-server/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps --skill add-app-to-server -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps --path plugins/mcp-apps/skills/add-app-to-server
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/add-app-to-server/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps --skill add-app-to-server -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps/tree/HEAD/plugins/mcp-apps/skills/add-app-to-server/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- add an interactive table to an existing MCP tool
- render a metrics chart inside a tool result
- embed a PDF or map viewer in the host conversation
- split app tools from plain text-only tools in one server
- migrate a server from SDK v1 to the split `^2.0.0` packages

## Example prompts
- Add a UI to the `list_items` tool in my MCP server, a table with search
- My MCP server is TypeScript, make `poll-system-stats` render a chart in the conversation
- Review my server's tools and tell me which ones would benefit from a view

# Add UI to MCP Server

Enrich an existing MCP server's tools with interactive UIs using the MCP Apps SDK (`@modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps`).

## How It Works

Existing tools get paired with HTML resources that render inline in the host's conversation. The tool continues to work for text-only clients — UI is an enhancement, not a replacement. Each tool that benefits from UI gets linked to a resource via `_meta.ui.resourceUri`, and the host renders that resource in a sandboxed iframe when the tool is called.

## Getting Reference Code

Clone the SDK repository for working examples and API documentation:

```bash
git clone --branch "v$(npm view @modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps version)" --depth 1 https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps.git /tmp/mcp-ext-apps
```

### API Reference (Source Files)

Read JSDoc documentation directly from `/tmp/mcp-ext-apps/src/`:

| File | Contents |
|------|----------|
| `src/app.ts` | `App` class, handlers (`ontoolinput`, `ontoolresult`, `onhostcontextchanged`, `onteardown`), lifecycle |
| `src/server/index.ts` | `registerAppTool`, `registerAppResource`, `getUiCapability`, tool visibility options |
| `src/spec.types.ts` | All type definitions: `McpUiHostContext`, CSS variable keys, display modes |
| `src/styles.ts` | `applyDocumentTheme`, `applyHostStyleVariables`, `applyHostFonts` |
| `src/react/useApp.tsx` | `useApp` hook for React apps |
| `src/react/useHostStyles.ts` | `useHostStyles`, `useHostStyleVariables`, `useHostFonts` hooks |

### Key Examples (Mixed Tool Patterns)

These examples demonstrate servers with both App-enhanced and plain tools — the exact pattern you're adding:

| Example | Pattern |
|---------|---------|
| `examples/map-server/` | `show-map` (App tool) + `geocode` (plain tool) |
| `examples/pdf-server/` | `display_pdf` (App tool) + `list_pdfs` (plain tool) + `read_pdf_bytes` (app-only tool) |
