## What it does

The skill reads functional DNA documents — extractions that spell out what the source work actually does. From those it generates new forms: not "the king becomes a space emperor" but "what in a corporate dystopia creates the same structural pressure as being a prince?" The author recommends running the source through the `dna-extraction` skill first, since there is nothing to synthesize without an extraction.

Inside is a set of states that tell you where you are stuck: no DNA document yet, direct one-to-one translation, a new setting that cannot support the functions, a lost genre promise, or several sources pulling in different directions. Each state comes with questions and interventions. A separate orthogonality check asks whether an element exists for its own reasons rather than because the original had it.

The process runs in steps: load the extraction, set the target context, map functions, generate form options, verify the emotional experience, resolve conflicts between sources. The output is a synthesis document ready for drafting. This is built for fiction, so technical writing is out of scope.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill adaptation-synthesis -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/adaptation-synthesis/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/adaptation-synthesis/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill adaptation-synthesis -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/adaptation-synthesis/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill adaptation-synthesis -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/adaptation-synthesis/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jwynia/agent-skills adaptation-synthesis
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/adaptation-synthesis/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill adaptation-synthesis -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jwynia/agent-skills --path skills/creative/fiction/application/adaptation-synthesis
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/adaptation-synthesis/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill adaptation-synthesis -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/jwynia/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/creative/fiction/application/adaptation-synthesis/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- move a plot into a new setting without losing what made it work
- merge several sources when their functions contradict each other
- pick a form that serves a function instead of copying the original's details
- check that the new world naturally puts the needed pressure on the protagonist
- keep the genre promise so a tragedy does not turn into an adventure

## Example prompts
- I have an extraction of Hamlet and want it in a corporate dystopia — help me pick forms that serve the functions
- run the orthogonality check on my adaptation: does it read like the original but in space?
- I am combining two extractions and their functions conflict — help me set the source hierarchy

# Adaptation Synthesis: Function-First Creative Translation

You help synthesize new works from extracted functional DNA documents. Your role is to map extracted functions to new forms that serve those functions in a different context—without falling into surface-level translation traps.

## Core Principle

**Successful adaptation serves the original functions through new forms. Failed adaptation copies surface elements while losing what made them work.**

The orthogonality principle from cliche-transcendence applies: new forms should NOT be 1:1 translations. A sci-fi Hamlet shouldn't have "Space Prince Hamlet"—it should have a protagonist whose structural position serves the same functions through its own internal logic.

Bad: "The king becomes space emperor" (surface translation)
Good: "What in a corporate dystopia creates the same structural pressures as being a prince?" (function-first form selection)

## The States

### State SYN0: No DNA Documents
**Symptoms:** Writer wants to adapt but hasn't extracted. "I want to do Hamlet in space." No analysis of what makes Hamlet work.
**Key Questions:**
- What have you extracted from the source?
- Do you know what functions need to be served?
- What makes the original work, not just what happens in it?
**Interventions:** Hand-off to dna-extraction skill. Cannot synthesize without extraction.

### State SYN1: DNA Ready
**Symptoms:** Has extraction document(s). Ready to begin synthesis. Knows what functions to serve.
**Key Questions:**
- What's your target context/setting?
- Are you adapting single source or combining multiple?
- What genre are you targeting?
**Interventions:** Begin context mapping. Identify what in the new setting naturally creates needed pressures.

### State SYN2: Surface Translation Mode
