## What it does

The skill reads a search term report and hunts for exclusion candidates: sorts by cost, drops queries with zero conversions, and classifies what is left by junk category. Then it picks a match type and an exclusion level — shared list, campaign or ad group. Both B2B lead gen and e-commerce are covered.

One rule drives most of the damage control: negatives do not expand to close variants. Positive keywords do that automatically, so plurals, synonyms and word stems have to be added as separate entries. The skill defaults to phrase match — one entry kills a whole junk theme, and a wrong call costs that theme rather than the account. Broad match is reserved for terms that are wrong in every recombination, and only after the conflict check against active keywords comes back clean.

Before analysing anything it asks a short set of questions: what counts as a conversion, target CPA or ROAS, the CPC range, themes that must never be blocked, and which levels you can edit. With no search term report it names zero candidate negatives — a list invented from imagination hides which converting queries it would block. The one exception is a brand-new campaign with no history: a starter list gets labelled pre-launch and reviewed against real queries after 7-14 days. For account-wide underperformance with no query-level evidence, this is the wrong skill.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-negative-keywords -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ad-negative-keywords/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ad-negative-keywords/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-negative-keywords -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ad-negative-keywords/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-negative-keywords -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ad-negative-keywords/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mbfinotti/advertising-skills ad-negative-keywords
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ad-negative-keywords/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-negative-keywords -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mbfinotti/advertising-skills --path skills/ad-negative-keywords
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ad-negative-keywords/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-negative-keywords -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- strip zero-conversion queries out of a search term report
- choose a match type without cutting converting queries
- build a shared exclusion list new campaigns inherit
- check candidates against active keywords for conflicts
- set up a recurring review pass instead of a one-off cleanup

## Example prompts
- pull the search term report for the last 30 days and propose negatives
- check these candidates for conflicts with active keywords
- build a shared exclusion list by junk category

# Negative Keywords

Build and maintain a negative keyword list from search term reports, so paid-search budget stops leaking to irrelevant queries - without blocking the queries that convert.

The mechanics - match types, exclusion levels, thresholds, cadence - are identical for B2B lead gen and B2C/e-commerce. Two things differ by segment:

- Which junk categories dominate (see taxonomy).
- The decision data: B2B's sparse conversions force click/cost gates, B2C volume allows conversion-based gates.

## Evidence gate

- Never propose specific negative keywords for a live account without its search term report (also called search query report).
- Missing report → request an export, explain the overblocking review below, and name zero candidate negatives in the meantime.
- Exception: a brand-new campaign with no history may get a starter exclusion list - label it "pre-launch starter, review against real queries after 7-14 days".

A list invented from imagination has no evidence of what actually matches, and its cost, blocked converting queries, stays invisible.

## Clarifying questions

Ask once, briefly, before analyzing. Skip anything already answered. This is a tactical pass, not an interview.

1. What counts as a conversion, and what is the target CPA or ROAS?
