# ad-hook-analyzer

Scores the opening seconds of a batch of video ad candidates and returns a ranked shortlist of which hooks deserve test budget. Useful before launch, when you have more variants than money.

## What it does

The skill reads a script, transcript, storyboard, shot list or a description of a finished cut, then compares the openings against each other. It interviews you first: platform and exact placement, B2B or B2C, cold prospecting or retargeting, the offer, and who the buyer is. No answers, no scoring.

Each candidate then faces four hard gates, and the survivors get qualitative bands — strong, adequate, weak — across seven dimensions. No decimals, no composite score. Ranking happens by pairwise comparison: which of these two would I fund first, and why. A paired same-judge comparison cancels out the judge's bias, which is why the author prefers it over tallying bands into a number. The skill also refuses to predict absolute performance: hook rate is a practitioner-invented ratio, not a native platform metric, and its denominator differs between dashboards.

The scoring window follows the placement. Feed and short-form vertical means roughly the first 3 seconds; skippable in-stream means about 5 seconds up to the skip button. For bumper and non-skippable, scroll-stopping logic does not apply at all, so only continuity, branding and audience qualification are judged. Scope ends at the ranking. Writing the scripts is `mbfinotti/advertising-skills@ugc-ad-scripts`, and static copy is `mbfinotti/advertising-skills@ad-copy-variants`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-hook-analyzer -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ad-hook-analyzer/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ad-hook-analyzer/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-hook-analyzer -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ad-hook-analyzer/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-hook-analyzer -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ad-hook-analyzer/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mbfinotti/advertising-skills ad-hook-analyzer
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ad-hook-analyzer/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-hook-analyzer -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mbfinotti/advertising-skills --path skills/ad-hook-analyzer
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ad-hook-analyzer/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-hook-analyzer -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mbfinotti/advertising-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/ad-hook-analyzer/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- decide which hooks to put test budget behind
- compare openings of several candidates on one scale
- drop gate-failing variants before spending anything
- get one concrete note on what would raise a candidate's rank
- record a predicted rank order to check against measured results

## Example prompts
- Here are 6 candidate openings, rank them and tell me which to test first
- Score the hooks in this shot list for short-form vertical, cold prospecting, B2C
- Which of these two hooks would you fund first, and why?

# Hook Analyzer

You are a performance-creative analyst. Read a batch of candidate video-ad openings and decide
which ones are worth spending test budget on. The output is a relative ranking within one batch

- a shortlisting device.

The market is the judge; this skill only decides which candidates get to face it.

The method is built on honesty about what a pre-launch hook score can and cannot do:

- "Hook rate" is a practitioner-invented derived ratio, not a native platform metric, and its
  denominator differs across dashboards.
- One agency's analysis of the same 11 brands (drawn from 3,859 ads) found hook rate correlated
  **-0.19 with ROAS** and hold rate -0.10 - slightly the _wrong_ direction (Sweat Pants Agency;
  single-agency data, not peer-reviewed, but directionally matched by independent practitioner
  accounts).
- Roughly 5% of creatives become winners at all (Motion 2026, 578,750 creatives).
- Human hook-taxonomy tagging has poor inter-rater reliability, because the taxonomies overlap
  and lack falsifiable definitions.

So this skill never produces an absolute predicted-performance number. It produces:

- a **relative ranking of candidate openings within one batch** - never a score comparable
  across batches, accounts, or platforms;
- **anchored qualitative bands** (strong / adequate / weak) per dimension, with concrete anchors
