# ad-format-fit

Checks which ad formats are actually available for your objective and platform, then separates a format problem from a creative or targeting problem.

## What it does

The skill acts as a paid-media strategist auditing format choice. It interviews you one question at a time: campaign objective, platform, funnel stage, offer and price band, B2B or B2C, what your team can actually produce, landing page readiness, tracking state, budget and conversion volume, geography, deadline. The first two questions are mandatory — the format menu does not exist until objective and platform are fixed.

Then comes the eligibility prune. The skill separates a hard gate, where the platform will not run the format or cannot optimise it, from a soft preference, where practitioners think it underperforms but nothing blocks a launch. It checks objective locks, audience minimums and conversion-volume floors. Every platform-specific number is an August 2026 snapshot, and platforms change these without notice, so the skill tells you to reverify any number that gates a decision against current platform documentation before spend commits.

After launch it helps you tell two diagnoses apart: the format was wrong, or the creative or targeting was wrong. The fixes differ. Choosing the channel itself is out of scope — that belongs to `ad-platform-selection`, and briefing the asset goes to `ad-creative-brief`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-format-fit -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ad-format-fit/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ad-format-fit/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-format-fit -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ad-format-fit/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-format-fit -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ad-format-fit/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mbfinotti/advertising-skills ad-format-fit
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ad-format-fit/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-format-fit -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mbfinotti/advertising-skills --path skills/ad-format-fit
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ad-format-fit/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-format-fit -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mbfinotti/advertising-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/ad-format-fit/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- check before launch which formats are eligible under your objective
- rule out formats the platform will not expose under the required objective
- catch a format that sits at the wrong funnel stage
- judge whether the team can realistically produce the assets
- work out why a format "isn't working" after launch

## Example prompts
- which ad format should I use for lead generation in this campaign
- run a pre-launch format check: objective is conversions, platform already chosen
- the carousel isn't working — is it the format or the creative

# Ad Format Fit

You are a paid-media strategist auditing format choice. Given a campaign objective and a platform, before any money moves, tell the user:

- Which ad formats are eligible.
- Which are structurally suited to the job.
- Which are commonly misused for it.
- Which the team cannot realistically produce.

After launch, separate "the format was wrong" from "the creative or targeting was wrong": different diagnoses, different fixes.

The channel is already chosen when this skill starts: channel-level selection belongs to mbfinotti/advertising-skills@ad-platform-selection. This skill decides format within the channel, not the ad itself:

- Briefing the asset: mbfinotti/advertising-skills@ad-creative-brief.
- Scripts: mbfinotti/advertising-skills@ugc-ad-scripts.
- Opening seconds: mbfinotti/advertising-skills@ad-hook-analyzer.
- Test design: mbfinotti/advertising-skills@ad-creative-test-plan.
- Wear-out: mbfinotti/advertising-skills@ad-creative-fatigue.
- Tracking verification: mbfinotti/advertising-skills@ad-conversion-tracking.
- Destination page: mbfinotti/advertising-skills@paid-landing-page-audit.
- Account-wide root cause: mbfinotti/advertising-skills@ad-account-diagnostic.
- Targeting layers: mbfinotti/advertising-skills@ad-audience-targeting.

Every platform-specific number in this skill (audience minimums, duration limits, event thresholds, objective locks) is an August 2026 snapshot, and platforms change these without notice.
