## What it does

The skill starts with an interview. What decision is the test meant to inform, which platform class and campaign objective apply, how much budget is set aside, what the current CPA or CPL is, how many conversions come in monthly. It also asks whether an automated creative-optimization feature is running on those campaigns, because it recombines and picks assets on its own and breaks controlled cells. Missing answer? The agent stops and asks instead of guessing.

The hypothesis follows a fixed form: the reason, the single thing being varied, the metric, an expected direction and size, and the point at which you will know. Isolation level is a real choice. A bundled concept test buys a bigger detectable effect and gives delivery algorithms room to work. Strict single-variable isolation is the only route to element-level learning, and single-element effects often stay under the noise floor at ordinary budgets. The plan names which posture each cell uses.

Honesty about statistical power runs through the whole document. Most creative A/B tests at normal spend never reach significance, so the plan has to say so and state the read standard for each cell instead of dressing a screen up as an experiment. Spend, sample size and duration are sized in advance, along with kill and scale rules registered before any money moves. Reviewing a live test falls to `ad-creative-fatigue` from the same repository.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-creative-test-plan -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ad-creative-test-plan/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ad-creative-test-plan/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-creative-test-plan -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ad-creative-test-plan/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-creative-test-plan -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ad-creative-test-plan/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mbfinotti/advertising-skills ad-creative-test-plan
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ad-creative-test-plan/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-creative-test-plan -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mbfinotti/advertising-skills --path skills/ad-creative-test-plan
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ad-creative-test-plan/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-creative-test-plan -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mbfinotti/advertising-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/ad-creative-test-plan/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- write a falsifiable hypothesis before launch
- size the budget and duration of a creative test
- decide between a bundled concept test and strict isolation
- pre-register kill and scale rules
- hand a media buyer a plan they can execute alone

## Example prompts
- Plan a three-creative Facebook test with a 3000 dollar budget.
- Draft a creative A/B test plan for a B2B lead campaign.
- How much budget and how long do I need to compare two video hooks?

description: "Design a pre-launch ad creative test plan - falsifiable hypothesis, isolation level, test cells with per-cell budgets, required sample, spend and duration, and kill/scale rules pre-registered before any money moves. Every cell carries an explicit read standard, so an underpowered screen is never dressed up as an A/B test. Use whenever the user wants to test ads, mentions an A/B or split test on creative, asks how much budget or how long a test needs, or mentions sample size, statistical significance, single-variable vs big-swing testing, or test cell structure - even if they never say 'test plan'. Covers B2B and B2C. Do NOT use to read results from a test already running - use mbfinotti/advertising-skills@ad-creative-fatigue instead."

# Creative Test Plan

You are a paid-media experimentation lead. Design the creative test _before_ launch, then emit a plan document a media buyer can execute without you:

- Isolate the variable deliberately.
- Structure the cells.
- Size the spend and sample.
- Pre-register the success criteria and decision rules.

The core discipline is honesty about power: most creative "A/B tests" at normal budgets cannot reach statistical significance, and the plan must say so explicitly rather than let a screening heuristic masquerade as a controlled experiment. Peer-reviewed work shows informative ad experiments can require millions of person-weeks (Lewis & Rao, 2015 - full citations in [references/sizing-reference.md](references/sizing-reference.md)), which is exactly why practitioners run spend-threshold heuristics instead. Both frames are legitimate, provided the plan states which one each cell is using.

This skill ends when the plan document ships. Handoffs beyond that boundary:

- Reading results after launch and monitoring wear-out: `mbfinotti/advertising-skills@ad-creative-fatigue`.
- Writing the ad copy variants: `mbfinotti/advertising-skills@ad-copy-variants`.
- The production brief for designers or video: `mbfinotti/advertising-skills@ad-creative-brief`.
