## What it does

This skill audits conversion tracking before paid traffic starts spending campaign budget. It enforces a fixed nine-step sequence. The audit covers primary conversion actions, tag debugger previews, payload inspections, and server-side deduplication. A brief intake records campaign platforms, funnel types, consent banner rules, and technical constraints.

Screenshots of green tags are never enough. The skill demands an end-to-end test conversion where an action is completed, its payload is verified in browser network logs, and the platform UI confirms receipt with proper values. Everything concludes with an explicit GO or NO-GO report tied to a designated approver.

This skill inspects and never touches code. It produces evidence and logs defects, but developers or agencies must apply the actual tracking fixes. Post-launch reconciliation against CRM figures belongs to the companion skill `ad-attribution-gap`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-conversion-tracking -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ad-conversion-tracking/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ad-conversion-tracking/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-conversion-tracking -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ad-conversion-tracking/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-conversion-tracking -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ad-conversion-tracking/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mbfinotti/advertising-skills ad-conversion-tracking
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ad-conversion-tracking/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-conversion-tracking -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mbfinotti/advertising-skills --path skills/ad-conversion-tracking
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ad-conversion-tracking/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-conversion-tracking -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mbfinotti/advertising-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/ad-conversion-tracking/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- verify deduplication between browser tags and server events
- exclude test conversion entries before paid campaigns begin
- isolate primary conversion goals from secondary micro-actions
- generate an evidence-backed GO / NO-GO pre-launch report

## Example prompts
- Check our tracking pixel and Conversions API setup before launch
- Why are form submissions recording duplicate conversions in the ad platform?
- Run a pre-launch tracking audit and produce a GO / NO-GO decision

name: ad-conversion-tracking
description: "Verify that conversion events are correctly configured, firing once, and deduplicated before a paid campaign launches, then turn the evidence into a GO / NO-GO decision. Covers tag debugging, test conversion tracing, browser/server event deduplication (including Conversions API setups), value and currency checks, conversion action status, consent handling, and test-data exclusion. Use whenever the user asks if their tracking works, mentions a pixel or tag check, conversions not showing up, duplicate conversions, or a pre-launch checklist - even if they never say 'conversion tracking'. Covers B2B lead gen and B2C ecommerce on any ad platform. Do NOT use to reconcile platform vs CRM numbers after launch - use mbfinotti/advertising-skills@ad-attribution-gap instead."

# Conversion Tracking

Verify that conversion tracking actually measures reality before a single dollar of campaign budget spends.

- **The anti-pattern this skill exists to prevent:** teams treat tracking as a launch-checklist checkbox, tick it off from a settings screenshot, and discover it was broken only once the spend report stops making sense. 70-80% of B2B SaaS search accounts audited by GrowthSpree carry at least one significant conversion tracking issue.
- **The governing principle:** bad conversion data does not merely misreport, it actively trains the bidding algorithm to find the wrong people - "if your tracking is inaccurate, every optimisation decision made by the platform will be based on incorrect data" (PPC Hero).

The output is a verification report with per-check evidence, ending in an explicit GO / NO-GO decision with a named approver.

## Scope and handoffs

This skill verifies; it never implements. It produces the checklist, walks the evidence, and issues the verdict - writing or installing tracking code belongs to whoever owns implementation (identified in the Interview). Adjacent ground goes to siblings:

- Reconciling cross-platform numbers after launch → `mbfinotti/advertising-skills@ad-attribution-gap`.
- Account-level performance root-cause diagnosis → `mbfinotti/advertising-skills@ad-account-diagnostic` (it hands tracking FAILs back here).
- Landing-page conversion-rate review → `mbfinotti/advertising-skills@paid-landing-page-audit`.
- Ongoing creative decay monitoring → `mbfinotti/advertising-skills@ad-creative-fatigue`.
