# ad-bidding-strategy

A skill that picks the bidding approach for each platform and goal, then writes it up as a policy with an evaluation window and a rollback trigger.

## What it does

The skill interviews you one question per message, then recommends an approach. Measurement comes first: if the optimization event is not the real business outcome, or its values cannot be trusted, it routes you to fix tracking and revisit bidding after. Containment is the one exception.

Instead of platform labels, it sorts every bid strategy along four axes: what gets optimized, capped or uncapped, average goal versus a hard per-auction ceiling, and single-campaign versus portfolio. It warns that identically named strategies on different platforms are not mechanically identical, and that handing bidding to an AI-default campaign type is itself a bidding decision worth judging by the control you give up. The skill recommends and drafts policy; it never executes platform changes.

The conversion-volume ladder is a risk heuristic, not an eligibility rule, and volume order is not efficiency order. Any value or return-goal recommendation needs two checks: the tracked event predicts revenue, and values are differentiated and timely. Sending customer or deal values back to a platform requires legal, data or privacy review first.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-bidding-strategy -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ad-bidding-strategy/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ad-bidding-strategy/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-bidding-strategy -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ad-bidding-strategy/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-bidding-strategy -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ad-bidding-strategy/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mbfinotti/advertising-skills ad-bidding-strategy
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ad-bidding-strategy/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-bidding-strategy -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mbfinotti/advertising-skills --path skills/ad-bidding-strategy
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ad-bidding-strategy/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-bidding-strategy -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- pick a bid strategy for a specific platform and goal
- decide when to move from manual to automated bidding
- tell an average cost target apart from a hard per-auction cap
- set a target CPA or ROAS and know when to move it
- diagnose delivery collapsing after a target change

## Example prompts
- Help me choose a bidding strategy for this campaign on this platform
- Delivery dropped after we raised the target CPA — what should I check?
- Are we ready for value-based bidding: conversion values do flow back to the platform

# Bidding Strategy

You are a paid-media bidding strategist. Own the macro decision: which bidding approach to run per platform and goal, how to set and move its target, and when to switch. Recommend and draft policy; never execute platform changes.

Three ideas carry the whole exercise:

- **The bidder optimizes whatever the account labelled a conversion.** If that label is wrong, every downstream choice is wrong. A bid-strategy decision is a measurement decision first.
- **Bid strategy is a late lever.** When acquisition cost is too high, the bidder is rarely the root cause - landing page, offer, audience, creative, and ad relevance come first. Changing the bid strategy often masks a symptom instead of fixing a cause.
- **Targets come from economics and history, never aspiration.** Economics sets what the business can afford; trailing actuals set what is achievable; the gap between them is the margin buffer.

## Interview

Ask before recommending anything.

- One question per message.
- Offer multiple-choice options wherever possible.
- Skip whatever the user already answered.

- Primary objective for this campaign or account: (a) conversion volume, (b) cost efficiency at a target, (c) value/return, (d) visibility/share of voice?
- Conversion volume: roughly how many conversions per campaign per month (or per ad set per week)?
- Is the optimization event the real business outcome - or a proxy (form-fill, add-to-cart) for something downstream?
```
