# ad-audience-targeting

Turns an ICP and buying signals into a layered ad targeting plan: cold broad, interests, lookalike, first-party lists and retargeting, sized and budgeted with exclusions.

## What it does

The skill takes an ideal-customer profile plus the behaviour that signals intent to buy, and lays it out across six audience tiers. For each one it states how the audience is defined, whether its size clears the platform floor, what budget it needs to get past a campaign's learning threshold, and which exclusions stop the tiers from bidding against each other.

B2B and B2C diverge in emphasis. A B2B universe often falls below platform minimums, so the plan leans on firmographic filters and uploaded lists. In B2C the weight shifts to broad reach, lookalike and behavioural segments. Tier logic and exclusion rules stay the same in both cases.

Evidence is a hard requirement. An ICP document, CRM or customer data, analytics, or past campaign results must back every tier. With no ICP the skill stops and asks for one rather than guessing a customer from the product description. Privacy review is handled the same blunt way: when no review is available at all, tiers that require uploading identifiable data are dropped from the plan instead of ranked last.

The output is the plan itself. Platform setup is out of scope, as are picking lookalike seeds and designing per-stage retargeting sequences.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-audience-targeting -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ad-audience-targeting/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ad-audience-targeting/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-audience-targeting -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ad-audience-targeting/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-audience-targeting -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ad-audience-targeting/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mbfinotti/advertising-skills ad-audience-targeting
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ad-audience-targeting/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-audience-targeting -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mbfinotti/advertising-skills --path skills/ad-audience-targeting
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ad-audience-targeting/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/advertising-skills --skill ad-audience-targeting -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- split an ICP into audience tiers for paid campaigns
- check whether an audience clears platform size minimums
- budget a tier up to the campaign learning threshold
- stop campaigns from overlapping with exclusion rules
- decide between B2B and B2C tier emphasis

## Example prompts
- Build a targeting plan from this ICP: which audience tiers to run and how to separate them with exclusions
- Check whether my B2B universe clears platform floors and give me budgets per tier
- Here is our CRM export and monthly budget — lay out a plan with retargeting and lookalike tiers

Use whenever the user mentions ad targeting, who to target with ads, audience tiers or layers, broad vs. layered targeting, audience overlap between campaigns, or mapping an ICP onto ad audiences - even if they never say 'audience'. Covers B2B and B2C. # Audience Targeting

Map who the customer is (ICP) and what they do that signals intent (buying signals) into a layered paid-media targeting plan: which audience tiers to run, how each is defined, sized, budgeted, sequenced for testing, and kept from bidding against the others.

The tier logic, exclusion discipline, overlap math, and funding floors are identical for B2B and B2C. What differs (see the B2B vs. B2C section for detail):

- Universe size: B2B ICPs are often smaller than platform minimums.
- Which tiers dominate: B2B leans firmographic and list-based; B2C leans broad, lookalike, and behavioral.
- Cycle length.
- Success metric: pipeline quality vs. volume CPA/ROAS.

This skill produces the plan, not the platform setup. It places and sizes the retargeting tier but does not design the per-stage retargeting sequence (mbfinotti/advertising-skills@retargeting-funnel), and it assumes a seed list exists but does not select or build it (mbfinotti/advertising-skills@lookalike-audience-seeds).

## Evidence gate

- Never assert an ICP, a buying signal, or a tier without sourced data behind it: an ICP document, customer/CRM data, analytics, or past campaign results.
