## What it does

The skill tells the agent how to lay out RBAC in an application: classes for roles and permissions, role inheritance, and checks scoped to a resource and an action. It ships a short JavaScript example plus three guides under `references/` — a Node.js RBAC system, Python ABAC, and Java Spring Security RBAC. The agent pulls the structure from there and adapts it to your stack.

Reach for it once a project grows past a single access level: admin panels, API authorization, multi-tenant apps, compliance requirements. The skill sets an order of work — roles and permissions first, enforcement in code second. The practices section is blunt about what to avoid: handing out extra permissions, hardcoding them, or letting roles multiply.

The reference code is tied to specific frameworks and languages. On a different stack the agent will carry the idea over, but you still review the result yourself. Nothing gets installed beyond the skill file — these are instructions, not a library.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill access-control-rbac -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/access-control-rbac/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/access-control-rbac/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill access-control-rbac -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/access-control-rbac/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill access-control-rbac -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/access-control-rbac/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts access-control-rbac
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/access-control-rbac/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill access-control-rbac -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --path skills/access-control-rbac
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/access-control-rbac/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill access-control-rbac -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- design roles and permissions for a multi-tenant app
- add permission checks to an API before returning data
- set up role inheritance without duplicating permissions
- write access policies for an admin dashboard
- audit existing grants and cut the excessive ones

## Example prompts
- Design RBAC for our API: admin, editor and viewer roles with resource-level checks
- Review our roles file and point out where least privilege is broken
- Add a Python ABAC policy for document access based on user attributes

## Overview

Implement comprehensive Role-Based Access Control systems with permissions management, attribute-based policies, and least privilege principles.

## When to Use

- Multi-tenant applications
- Enterprise access management
- API authorization
- Admin dashboards
- Data access controls
- Compliance requirements

## Quick Start

Minimal working example:

```javascript
// rbac-system.js
class Permission {
  constructor(resource, action) {
    this.resource = resource;
    this.action = action;
  }
  toString() {
    return `${this.resource}:${this.action}`;
  }
}
class Role {
  constructor(name, description) {
    this.name = name;
    this.description = description;
    this.permissions = new Set();
    this.inherits = new Set();
  }
  addPermission(permission) {
    this.permissions.add(permission.toString());
  }
  removePermission(permission) {
// ... (see reference guides for full implementation)
```

## Best Practices

### ✅ DO

- Implement least privilege
- Use role hierarchies
- Audit access changes
- Regular access reviews
- Separate duties
- Document permissions
- Test access controls
- Use attribute-based policies

### ❌ DON'T

- Grant excessive permissions
- Share accounts
- Skip access reviews
- Hardcode permissions
- Ignore audit logs
- Use role explosion
