## What it does

academic-search drafts Boolean search queries, suggests databases, terms, and filters for a research topic. It can also use citation chaining, concept mapping, and the PICO framework for medical and health questions.

When you provide papers or abstracts, the skill summarizes findings, explains methodology, identifies recurring themes, and helps organise citations. Its reading framework moves from a relevance check to close review of assumptions and results.

The skill does not run database searches or access paywalled journals and full texts unless you provide them. That matters: attach the material you want analysed.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add claude-office-skills/skills --skill academic-search -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/academic-search/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/academic-search/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add claude-office-skills/skills --skill academic-search -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/academic-search/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add claude-office-skills/skills --skill academic-search -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/academic-search/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install claude-office-skills/skills academic-search
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/academic-search/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add claude-office-skills/skills --skill academic-search -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/claude-office-skills/skills --path academic-search
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/academic-search/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add claude-office-skills/skills --skill academic-search -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/claude-office-skills/skills/tree/HEAD/academic-search/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- draft Boolean queries for a research topic
- choose databases and search filters
- assess a paper methodology from an abstract
- identify themes and research gaps across papers
- organise findings for a literature review

## Example prompts
- Create an academic search strategy for machine learning in education.
- Analyse this abstract and assess its methodology, findings, and limitations.
- Build search queries and key terms for my literature review topic.

# Academic Search Skill

## Overview

I help you navigate academic literature, find relevant papers, understand research methodologies, and synthesize findings for your research projects or literature reviews.

**What I can do:**
- Formulate academic search queries
- Recommend databases and search strategies
- Analyze paper abstracts and summaries
- Explain research methodologies
- Help structure literature reviews
- Identify research gaps

**What I cannot do:**
- Access full-text papers (unless provided)
- Execute actual database searches
- Access paywalled journals
- Conduct original research

---

## How to Use Me

### Step 1: Define Your Research Topic

Tell me:
- Your research question or topic
- Academic field/discipline
- Scope (broad survey vs. specific topic)
- Purpose (literature review, thesis, curiosity)

### Step 2: Get Search Strategy

I'll provide:
- Optimized search queries
- Recommended databases
- Key terms and synonyms
- Search methodology

### Step 3: Analyze Findings

If you share papers/abstracts, I can:
- Summarize key findings
- Explain methodologies
- Identify themes and patterns
- Help organize citations

---
