## What it does

Two workflows sit under one skill, and knowing which one you need saves time. Architecture diagrams, pipelines and loops go through Gemini image generation: hand it a section of the paper, it pulls out the components and the links between them, picks a visual style and returns a picture. Charts built from numbers come from matplotlib and seaborn, with the chart type chosen for you. Training steps become a line plot, methods across benchmarks become grouped bars, a matrix of values becomes a heatmap.

The skill also spells out the working order: read the context, list the entities, choose a layout, assign colors. A table maps each figure type to the right tool, and a set of visual styles is meant to stay consistent across the whole paper. Labels are copied from your text, so a real draft of the section works better than a one-line request.

Dependencies are `matplotlib>=3.8.0`, `seaborn>=0.13.0`, `numpy` and `google-genai>=1.0.0`. That last one only matters for diagrams. A paper made of curves and bars needs just the two plotting libraries. The skill text cuts off partway through the style descriptions, so the remaining styles and the generation steps are not visible in the repository version.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill academic-plotting -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/academic-plotting/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/academic-plotting/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill academic-plotting -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/academic-plotting/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill academic-plotting -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/academic-plotting/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs academic-plotting
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/academic-plotting/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill academic-plotting -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --path 20-ml-paper-writing/academic-plotting
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/academic-plotting/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill academic-plotting -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- draw an architecture diagram from a method section
- choose a chart type for a results table
- highlight your method against the baselines
- plot training curves from experiment logs
- build a heatmap from a matrix of values

## Example prompts
- Here's the draft of our method section — build an architecture diagram from it in the modern minimal style.
- Results table below: three methods, two benchmarks. Grouped bars, and give our method its own color.
- The training log is in `results.csv` — plot loss over steps.

# Academic Plotting for ML Papers

Generate publication-quality figures for ML/AI conference papers. Two distinct workflows:

1. **Diagram figures** (architecture, system design, workflows, pipelines) — AI image generation via Gemini
2. **Data figures** (line charts, bar charts, scatter plots, heatmaps, ablations) — matplotlib/seaborn

## When to Use Which Workflow

| Figure Type | Tool | Why |
|-------------|------|-----|
| Architecture / system diagram | Gemini (Workflow 1) | Complex spatial layouts with boxes, arrows, labels |
| Workflow / pipeline / lifecycle | Gemini (Workflow 1) | Multi-step processes with connections |
| Bar chart, line plot, scatter | matplotlib (Workflow 2) | Precise numerical data, reproducible |
| Heatmap, confusion matrix | matplotlib/seaborn (Workflow 2) | Structured grid data |
| Ablation table as chart | matplotlib (Workflow 2) | Grouped bars or line comparisons |
| Pie / donut chart | matplotlib (Workflow 2) | Proportional data (use sparingly in ML papers) |
| Training curves | matplotlib (Workflow 2) | Loss/accuracy over steps/epochs |

**Rule of thumb**: If the figure has numerical axes, use matplotlib. If the figure has boxes and arrows, use Gemini.

## Step 0: Context Analysis & Extraction

The user will typically provide one of these inputs — not a ready-made specification:

| Input Type | Example | What to Extract |
|-----------|---------|-----------------|
| Full paper / section draft | "Here's our method section..." | System components, their relationships, data flow |
```
