## What it does

This skill supplies Django architecture rules centered on the Fat Models approach. The primary target is Django 6.1 on Python 3.14. The baseline assumes Django 6.0, while newer APIs use the `(6.1+)` marker. An isolated section at the end covers upgrade differences for Django 5.2 LTS.

Guidance is organized into dedicated reference files. `references/models-and-schema.md` handles schema design, constraint setup, and QuerySet performance. Another reference covers transactions, locking, and migration safety. Additional guides explain migration squashing, HTMX templates, async views, Factory Boy testing, and Django REST Framework endpoints.

This is a knowledge-only skill with no external tooling dependencies. It directly requires the `ac-python` skill for Python base standards. Project-specific patterns must stay out of it and belong in a separate overlay.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add souliane/skills --skill ac-django -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ac-django/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ac-django/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add souliane/skills --skill ac-django -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ac-django/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add souliane/skills --skill ac-django -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ac-django/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install souliane/skills ac-django
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ac-django/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add souliane/skills --skill ac-django -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/souliane/skills --path ac-django
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ac-django/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add souliane/skills --skill ac-django -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/souliane/skills/tree/HEAD/ac-django/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- optimize database queries and QuerySets
- squash application migration history safely
- configure DRF serializers and permissions
- manage transaction locking and idempotency

## Example prompts
- Review the order model and tune foreign key indexes using `references/models-and-schema.md`.
- Create a safe migration squashing plan following `references/squashing-migrations.md`.
- Inspect the DRF serializers and access permissions according to `references/admin-and-drf.md`.

# Django Bible (Django 6 · optional DRF)

**Targets:** Django **6.1** on Python **3.14** · **Previous line:** Django **5.2 LTS** (trailing section) · **API:** DRF _when you choose it_

## Version Policy

This skill documents **one** Django line: the current one. Keep it that way when
you update it.

- **Main path = the current feature release.** Today that is Django **6.1**. When
  a newer feature release lands, the main path moves to it in the same edit.
- **Unmarked prose means the first release of the current line** — Django **6.0**.
  Anything the line gained _after_ that carries a `(6.1+)` marker placed right
  after the API or feature it qualifies: `` `QuerySet.fetch_mode()` (6.1+) ``. One
  form only. Do not write "Django X.Y+ adds", "new in X.Y", "as of X.Y", or a
  `### Django X.Y note` heading — the marker is the whole convention, and it is
  only useful if it is the only one.
- **Older lines get one trailing section each, at the end of `SKILL.md`**, and
  nothing anywhere else — the reference files carry the current line only and get
  no trailing section of their own. Today that is
  `## Previous line: Django 5.2 LTS`. It carries the diff a reader on that
  version needs: what is missing, what to use instead, and what to change on
  upgrade. A version note interrupting the main path is a defect — move it down.
- **Research order when refreshing.** Release notes and official docs first
  (`docs.djangoproject.com/en/<version>/releases/<version>/` and the topic
  pages they link). Then the authors already cited under Canonical Sources. Blogs
  and newsletters last, briefly, for what the docs do not cover.
- **Rotation.** When Django releases the next line, the current trailing section
  is replaced by the line being retired, unmarked prose is re-based on the new
  line's first release, and markers below that release are dropped. Django 6.2 is
  the last release under the `A.B` scheme; feature releases after it use a
  calendar `YYYY` format, one every January. "Current line" then means the newest
  `YYYY` release, and the same rules apply unchanged.
