# a11y

Walks the interface through keyboard, screen reader, contrast and semantics checks, then fixes what it finds. Useful when a component fails without a mouse.

## What it does

The skill runs in stages. Automated tools first: axe-core, WAVE or Pa11y against critical pages, with WCAG 2.1 AA as the baseline, and violations sorted by severity. Then a manual pass — unplug the mouse and reach every interactive element, check tab order, focus traps, and whether custom components answer Enter, Space, Escape and arrow keys. Screen readers come next: NVDA, VoiceOver or TalkBack, navigating by headings and landmarks, confirming that dynamic changes and errors get announced.

Visual checks cover contrast at 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text and UI components, zoom at 200% and 400% without content loss, and simulated color-vision deficiencies. Motion gets its own pass: `prefers-reduced-motion` must leave the interface usable, and nothing important should sit behind an animation-only reveal. Fixes are grouped by area — semantic HTML, keyboard support, focus management, ARIA.

Before any of that, the skill requires loading `$frontend-design` and following its Context Gathering Protocol; with no design context yet, `$setup` comes first. This is not a standalone linter — skip those dependencies and the workflow will not start. Automated results count as a fast warning system, not a full audit, so the manual steps are not optional.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill a11y -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/a11y/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/a11y/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill a11y -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/a11y/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill a11y -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/a11y/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aladicf/better-web-ui a11y
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/a11y/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill a11y -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aladicf/better-web-ui --path skills/a11y
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/a11y/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill a11y -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aladicf/better-web-ui/tree/HEAD/skills/a11y/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find interactive elements you cannot reach with a keyboard
- fix a focus trap inside a modal
- raise text and component contrast to 4.5:1 and 3:1
- swap clickable `div` elements for real `button` elements
- make error messages and status updates announce to screen readers

## Example prompts
- audit the checkout page for accessibility issues
- make the dropdown component keyboard accessible
- fix WCAG violations in the signup form

name: a11y
description: Systematically audit and remediate accessibility issues in UI, focusing on keyboard navigation, screen reader support, color contrast, semantic HTML, ARIA usage, and motion sensitivity. Systematically improve accessibility so the interface works for users with disabilities, temporary impairments, and assistive technology.

This skill focuses on remediation and implementation, not just scoring. It complements `audit` (which measures across dimensions) and `harden` (which handles edge cases broadly). Use this when accessibility is the primary goal.

## MANDATORY PREPARATION

Users start this workflow with `/a11y`. Once this skill is active, load $frontend-design — it contains design principles, anti-patterns, and the **Context Gathering Protocol**. Follow that protocol before proceeding — if no design context exists yet, you MUST load $setup first.

Consult the [accessibility testing reference](../frontend-design/reference/accessibility-testing.md) for automated tool integration (axe, WAVE, Pa11y) and CI workflow guidance.
Consult the [colorblindness UX reference](../frontend-design/reference/colorblindness-ux.md) when color is carrying meaning in states, charts, or validation.
Consult the [component accessibility reference](../frontend-design/reference/component-accessibility.md) for keyboard support, focus handling, skip links, and hidden content patterns.
Consult the [interaction design reference](../frontend-design/reference/interaction-design.md) for focus, loading, transitions, and feedback states.
Consult the [semantic color reference](../frontend-design/reference/semantic-color.md) when checking whether color communicates state or just decoration.
Consult the [responsive design reference](../frontend-design/reference/responsive-design.md) when accessibility needs to adapt across small screens, touch contexts, or zoom levels.

## Assess Accessibility

Identify what is broken and who it affects:

1. **Run automated checks first**:
   - Use axe-core, WAVE, or Pa11y against critical pages
   - Target WCAG 2.1 AA as the baseline
   - Document violations by severity: critical (blocks task), serious (difficult workaround), moderate (annoying), minor (polish)
   - Treat automated results as a fast warning system, not a complete audit

2. **Test keyboard navigation manually**:
   - Unplug the mouse. Can you reach every interactive element?
   - Is the tab order logical and predictable?
```
The third-party file has ended. Everything between the a5fcdfd4a959d2f9 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
