# 701-technologies-openapi

Guides you through an OpenAPI 3.x contract: spec structure, reusable schemas, security schemes, breaking-change checks. Useful when the contract lives apart from the code.

## What it does

The skill walks an OpenAPI 3.x spec layer by layer: `openapi`, `info`, `servers`, `tags`, paths and operations with parameters and response codes, reusable `components`, examples, and security schemes with scopes. Versioning and metadata get their own pass. Nothing here is tied to a framework, so Spring Boot, Quarkus and Micronaut stay out of the advice unless you ask for them.

The workflow is spelled out: read `references/701-technologies-openapi.md`, inspect the current API artifacts, pick the smallest safe set of changes, apply them, then run checks. Project constraints apply. Before touching Java or Maven in the same change set, run `./mvnw compile` or `mvn compile`; before promoting changes, run `./mvnw clean verify` or `mvn clean verify`. If your goal is vague, the skill stops and asks a clarifying question rather than editing files.

Spec linting, breaking-change checks and pre-codegen gates are covered as topics, though a linter such as Spectral appears only as an example. If your contract is generated from code instead of written first, expect less from it — the skill sits on the contract-first side.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 701-technologies-openapi -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/701-technologies-openapi/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/701-technologies-openapi/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 701-technologies-openapi -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/701-technologies-openapi/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 701-technologies-openapi -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/701-technologies-openapi/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jabrena/plinth 701-technologies-openapi
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/701-technologies-openapi/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 701-technologies-openapi -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jabrena/plinth --path skills/701-technologies-openapi
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/701-technologies-openapi/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 701-technologies-openapi -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- review an OpenAPI spec and flag weak spots
- move shared types into reusable components
- model security schemes and scopes in the contract
- check a spec for breaking changes before release
- get a contract ready for codegen

## Example prompts
- Review my openapi.yaml and tell me what to fix
- Improve the API schema design and pull shared types into components
- Check this API contract for breaking changes

# OpenAPI 3.x best practices

Help teams produce maintainable **OpenAPI 3.x** contracts that stay aligned with HTTP semantics and consumer needs.

**What is covered in this Skill?**

- Document structure: `openapi`, `info`, `servers`, `tags`, and consistent resource grouping
- Path and operation design: parameters, request bodies, response matrices, `operationId`, status codes
- Reusable `components` (schemas, parameters, responses, security schemes) and examples
- Validation and CI: spec linting, breaking-change checks, pre-codegen gates
- Security modeling in the contract (schemes, scopes, global vs operation security)
- Clear boundaries between contract-first design and runtime implementation concerns

**Scope:** Contract-first quality only. Focus this skill on OpenAPI design, quality, and governance guidance.

## Constraints

Keep recommendations at the OpenAPI layer unless the user explicitly asks for Java framework integration. After editing this repository's XML sources, regenerate skills and verify the build.

- **MANDATORY**: Run `./mvnw compile` or `mvn compile` before proposing Java or Maven changes in the same change set
- **FRAMEWORK**: Keep guidance contract-centric; do not prescribe framework-specific controller wiring or runtime exposure details
- **FUZZING**: Keep fuzzing guidance high-level and contract-focused without linking to external skill identifiers
- **VERIFY**: Run `./mvnw clean verify` or `mvn clean verify` before promoting changes
- **EDGE CASE**: If the user goal is ambiguous, stop and ask a clarifying question before editing files or running project-wide commands
- **EDGE CASE**: If required context, files, credentials, or tools are missing, report the blocker explicitly and ask whether to proceed with setup or fallback guidance
