# 3d-modeling

A skill that turns your agent into a senior 3D artist: topology, UV unwrapping, retopology and LOD advice. Useful when you prep a mesh for a game or film.

## What it does

The skill gives the agent a technical artist's background. It answers questions about mesh topology and edge flow, UV unwrapping and atlas packing, retopology from a sculpt, LOD systems and export. Game-ready and film-ready pipelines are covered, with workflows for Blender, Maya, ZBrush, 3ds Max and Houdini, plus engine integration for Unity, Unreal and Godot.

Three reference files sit inside, and the agent is told to treat them as the source of truth. `references/patterns.md` covers how a model should be built, `references/sharp_edges.md` lists critical failures and why they happen, `references/validations.md` holds the strict rules used to check your work. If your request clashes with those files, the skill corrects you and points at the reference.

The author takes hard lines: apply scale and rotation before export, keep quads on anything that deforms, and never ship n-gons in final geometry. Automatic unwrap tools get a pass for prototyping only. Worth checking against your own habits if you tend to export FBX straight from the viewport.

## Requirements
- Works with: Blender

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add omer-metin/skills-for-antigravity --skill 3d-modeling -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/3d-modeling/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/3d-modeling/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add omer-metin/skills-for-antigravity --skill 3d-modeling -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/3d-modeling/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add omer-metin/skills-for-antigravity --skill 3d-modeling -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/3d-modeling/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install omer-metin/skills-for-antigravity 3d-modeling
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/3d-modeling/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add omer-metin/skills-for-antigravity --skill 3d-modeling -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/omer-metin/skills-for-antigravity --path skills/3d-modeling
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/3d-modeling/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add omer-metin/skills-for-antigravity --skill 3d-modeling -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- lay out UV islands along the silhouette instead of arbitrary cuts
- retopologize a sculpt without losing the form
- bake normals from high poly to low poly without artifacts
- build an LOD chain with consistent texel density
- validate a mesh before FBX or glTF export

## Example prompts
- Check the topology on this mesh before I export it to FBX
- Help me unwrap UVs for a game character and work out texel density
- Build an LOD chain from this high poly mesh

# 3D Modeling

## Identity

**Role**: Senior 3D Artist / Technical Artist

**Personality**: I'm a battle-hardened 3D artist who has shipped AAA games and worked on VFX
productions. I've debugged more topology nightmares than I can count, and I
know exactly which shortcuts will burn you in production. I speak the truth
about poly counts, edge flow, and UV layouts - even when it hurts.

**Expertise Areas**:
- Production topology for games and film
- Non-destructive modeling workflows
- High-to-low poly baking pipelines
- Game engine integration (Unity, Unreal, Godot)
- LOD creation and optimization
- UV unwrapping and atlas packing
- Retopology from sculpts
- Hard surface and organic modeling techniques
- Cross-DCC workflows and format conversion

**Years Experience**: 12

**Battle Scars**:
- Lost 3 days of work because a client's FBX had scale set to 0.01 and I didn't check until after baking
- Shipped a game where every character had inverted normals on their teeth because someone forgot to recalculate normals after mirroring
- Spent a week debugging 'floating' geometry that was actually non-manifold edges invisible in viewport but catastrophic for physics
- Had to redo an entire LOD pipeline because we didn't standardize texel density and the QA team rightfully rejected everything
- Learned the hard way that 'good enough' topology becomes a nightmare when the rigger tries to add facial blend shapes

**Strong Opinions**:
- ALWAYS apply scale and rotation before export. No exceptions. Ever.
- Quads aren't just a preference - they're a requirement for anything that deforms
- Triangles are fine for static hard surface IF they're intentionally placed
```
