## What it does

The skill kicks in when you add or review Flyway migrations in a Spring Boot app. It covers `flyway-core` plus database-specific modules alongside the Spring Boot BOM, versioned SQL files named `V{version}__{description}.sql` under `src/main/resources/db/migration`, and the `spring.flyway.*` properties for locations, baseline-on-migrate and validate-on-migrate. Data backfills can go through Java migrations built on `BaseJavaMigration`.

Four steps: read the three references, assess the project, apply framework-aligned changes, then verify. Before touching anything the skill insists the project compiles — `./mvnw compile` or `mvn compile` — and after improvements it runs `./mvnw clean verify`. A failed build stops the work. For breaking schema changes it defaults to Parallel Change: expand, migrate, contract.

Forward-only discipline applies: applied migrations in shared environments are not rewritten. Before recommending a migration, the skill checks whether it could break deployed app versions, dependent services, reports or jobs. If it could, a human has to sign off first. It pairs with `@311-frameworks-spring-jdbc` and `@312-frameworks-spring-data-jdbc`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 313-frameworks-spring-db-migrations-flyway -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/313-frameworks-spring-db-migrations-flyway/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/313-frameworks-spring-db-migrations-flyway/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 313-frameworks-spring-db-migrations-flyway -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/313-frameworks-spring-db-migrations-flyway/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 313-frameworks-spring-db-migrations-flyway -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/313-frameworks-spring-db-migrations-flyway/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jabrena/plinth 313-frameworks-spring-db-migrations-flyway
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/313-frameworks-spring-db-migrations-flyway/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 313-frameworks-spring-db-migrations-flyway -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jabrena/plinth --path skills/313-frameworks-spring-db-migrations-flyway
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/313-frameworks-spring-db-migrations-flyway/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 313-frameworks-spring-db-migrations-flyway -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- add a versioned SQL migration to a Spring Boot project
- lay out scripts under `db/migration` and set `spring.flyway.*`
- review migration ordering and spot version conflicts
- fix repeatable migrations that fire the wrong way
- run a breaking schema change through expand, migrate, contract

## Example prompts
- Add a Flyway migration for a new orders table in this Spring Boot project
- Review the migration order in `db/migration` and the `spring.flyway.*` settings
- Write a data backfill as a Java migration using `BaseJavaMigration`

# Spring — Database migrations (Flyway)

Apply Flyway migration guidelines for Spring Boot.

**What is covered in this Skill?**

- flyway-core and database-specific Flyway modules (e.g. PostgreSQL) with Spring Boot BOM
- Versioned SQL under `src/main/resources/db/migration` (`V{version}__{description}.sql`)
- `spring.flyway.*` properties: locations, baseline-on-migrate, validate-on-migrate
- Optional Java migrations (`BaseJavaMigration`) for data backfills
- Forward-only discipline: do not rewrite applied migrations in shared environments
- Parallel Change as the safe expand, migrate, contract workflow for breaking or data-sensitive schema changes
- Coordination with `@311-frameworks-spring-jdbc` and `@312-frameworks-spring-data-jdbc`

**Scope:** Apply recommendations based on the reference rules and good/bad examples.

## Constraints

Before applying Flyway or SQL changes, ensure the project compiles. After improvements, run full verification.

- **MANDATORY**: Run `./mvnw compile` or `mvn compile` before applying any change
- **SAFETY**: If compilation fails, stop immediately
- **VERIFY**: Run `./mvnw clean verify` or `mvn clean verify` after applying improvements
- **BEFORE APPLYING**: Read the reference for detailed rules and good/bad patterns
