## What it does

This skill guides assistants through inspecting and updating Spring Boot 4.0.x projects. It enforces component annotations like `@RestController` and `@Service`, constructor dependency injection, and `@ConfigurationProperties` backed by `@Validated`. It also checks namespace consistency, requiring `jakarta.*` instead of legacy `javax.*` packages.

The workflow relies on strict Maven gating: the assistant must execute `./mvnw compile` before editing anything. If compilation fails, work halts immediately to avoid compounding errors. After edits, the agent validates changes via `./mvnw clean verify`, while tuning features like graceful shutdown and virtual threads.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 301-frameworks-spring-boot-core -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/301-frameworks-spring-boot-core/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/301-frameworks-spring-boot-core/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 301-frameworks-spring-boot-core -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/301-frameworks-spring-boot-core/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 301-frameworks-spring-boot-core -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/301-frameworks-spring-boot-core/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jabrena/plinth 301-frameworks-spring-boot-core
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/301-frameworks-spring-boot-core/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 301-frameworks-spring-boot-core -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jabrena/plinth --path skills/301-frameworks-spring-boot-core
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/301-frameworks-spring-boot-core/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 301-frameworks-spring-boot-core -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- enforce constructor injection and bean qualification
- add startup validation to `@ConfigurationProperties`
- replace legacy `javax.*` imports with `jakarta.*`
- configure graceful shutdown and virtual threads

## Example prompts
- Review my Spring Boot project and convert field injection to constructors
- Configure virtual threads and graceful shutdown for this application
- Add fail-fast validation to configuration properties

# Spring Boot Core Guidelines

Apply Spring Boot Core guidelines for annotations, bean management, configuration, and dependency injection.

**What is covered in this Skill?**

- @SpringBootApplication and main application class
- Component annotations: @RestController, @Service, @Repository
- Bean definition, scoping, lifecycle
- Configuration classes and @ConfigurationProperties (with @Validated for fail-fast startup)
- Component scanning and package organization
- Conditional configuration and profiles (@Profile, @ConditionalOn*)
- Constructor dependency injection
- @Primary and @Qualifier for disambiguation when multiple beans share a type
- Bean minimization and composition
- Graceful shutdown for in-flight work
- Virtual threads on supported stacks for concurrency-bound workloads
- Jakarta EE namespace consistency (jakarta.* preferred; avoid mixing legacy javax.annotation / javax.validation)
- Scheduled tasks and background processing

**Scope:** Apply recommendations based on the reference rules and good/bad code examples.

## Constraints

Before applying any Spring Boot changes, ensure the project compiles. If compilation fails, stop immediately. After applying improvements, run full verification.

- **MANDATORY**: Run `./mvnw compile` or `mvn compile` before applying any change
- **SAFETY**: If compilation fails, stop immediately — compilation failure is a blocking condition
- **VERIFY**: Run `./mvnw clean verify` or `mvn clean verify` after applying improvements
- **BEFORE APPLYING**: Read the reference for detailed rules, good/bad patterns, and constraints
- **EDGE CASE**: If request scope is ambiguous, stop and ask a clarifying question before applying changes
- **EDGE CASE**: If required inputs, files, or tooling are missing, report what is missing and ask whether to proceed with setup guidance
