## What it does

The skill kicks in when you ask the agent to look at Java tests — find gaps in behavior coverage, work out why a test fails intermittently, or walk boundary values. Each request routes to its own reference file under `references/`: one for RIGHT-BICEP, one for A-TRIP, one for CORRECT. A broad review pulls all three and sorts findings by technique.

The workflow is fixed. First compile: `./mvnw compile` or `mvn compile`. A failed build stops the skill before it touches anything — that is a blocking condition, not a warning. Then the test edits, then a full check with `./mvnw clean verify` or `mvn clean verify`.

What you get back is analysis, not rewritten code: a RIGHT-BICEP gap matrix, an A-TRIP list of quality problems, a CORRECT boundary checklist. If the goal is unclear, the skill asks a clarifying question instead of editing files. The project has to build with Maven — on Gradle the compile and verify steps as described won't apply, so check your build commands before you start.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 130-java-testing-strategies -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/130-java-testing-strategies/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/130-java-testing-strategies/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 130-java-testing-strategies -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/130-java-testing-strategies/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 130-java-testing-strategies -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/130-java-testing-strategies/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jabrena/plinth 130-java-testing-strategies
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/130-java-testing-strategies/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 130-java-testing-strategies -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jabrena/plinth --path skills/130-java-testing-strategies
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/130-java-testing-strategies/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 130-java-testing-strategies -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/jabrena/plinth/tree/HEAD/skills/130-java-testing-strategies/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find which scenarios a Java test class is missing
- trace why a test fails only under a certain run order
- check boundary values: range, ordering, empty collections
- turn flaky tests into repeatable ones
- review a whole test suite and sort findings by technique

## Example prompts
- Review the tests in `OrderServiceTest` with RIGHT-BICEP and list what's missing
- These tests fail intermittently — go through them with A-TRIP and tell me why
- Check boundary conditions in `PaymentValidator` using CORRECT

# Java testing strategies

Apply proven testing strategies (RIGHT-BICEP, A-TRIP, CORRECT) to design and verify Java unit tests.

**What is covered in this Skill?**

- **RIGHT-BICEP**: Key questions to guide test creation — Right results, Boundary conditions, Inverse relationships, Cross-checks, Error conditions, Performance
- **A-TRIP**: Characteristics of good tests — Automatic, Thorough, Repeatable, Independent, Professional
- **CORRECT**: Boundary condition verification — Conformance, Ordering, Range, Reference, Existence, Cardinality, Time

## Constraints

Before applying any test strategy changes, ensure the project compiles. If compilation fails, stop immediately — do not proceed until resolved. After applying improvements, run full verification.

- **MANDATORY**: Run `./mvnw compile` or `mvn compile` before applying any change
- **SAFETY**: If compilation fails, stop immediately and do not proceed — compilation failure is a blocking condition
- **VERIFY**: Run `./mvnw clean verify` or `mvn clean verify` after applying improvements
- **BEFORE APPLYING**: Read only the testing-strategy references selected by the user's concern before changing tests
- **FOCUSED ROUTING**: For missing behavior coverage or RIGHT-BICEP requests, read `references/130-java-testing-strategies-right-bicep.md` by default
- **FOCUSED ROUTING**: For flaky, brittle, manual, order-dependent, shared-state, or maintainability requests, read `references/130-java-testing-strategies-a-trip.md` by default
- **FOCUSED ROUTING**: For boundary-condition or CORRECT requests, read `references/130-java-testing-strategies-correct.md` by default
- **BROAD REVIEW**: For broad test-strategy reviews, combine RIGHT-BICEP, A-TRIP, and CORRECT references and categorize findings by technique
- **EDGE CASE**: If the user goal is ambiguous, stop and ask a clarifying question before editing files or running project-wide commands
