# 128-java-generics

A skill that reviews and refactors Java generics: raw types, unchecked casts, PECS wildcards. Handy when a generic API starts leaking type safety.

## What it does

The skill reviews and refactors generics in Java code. It hunts raw types and unsafe casts, checks wildcards against the PECS rule, and looks at bounded type parameters, the diamond operator and generic inheritance. Type erasure gets its own pass, along with `@SafeVarargs` against heap pollution and how generics sit next to Records, sealed types and pattern matching.

Inside is a reference at `references/128-java-generics.md` with good and bad examples for each area. The workflow is fixed: compile first, read the reference and assess type safety, apply the refactorings, then verify. Maven is required — `./mvnw compile` or `mvn compile` before any change, `./mvnw clean verify` or `mvn clean verify` after. A failing build is a blocking condition, so the skill stops instead of editing. Check that your project compiles before you invoke it.

Ambiguous scope makes the skill stop and ask a clarifying question. Missing files or tooling get reported rather than guessed at. Behaviour of the code is preserved through the refactorings.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 128-java-generics -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/128-java-generics/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/128-java-generics/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 128-java-generics -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/128-java-generics/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 128-java-generics -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/128-java-generics/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jabrena/plinth 128-java-generics
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/128-java-generics/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 128-java-generics -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jabrena/plinth --path skills/128-java-generics
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/128-java-generics/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 128-java-generics -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- strip raw types out of legacy Java code
- fix unchecked casts and compiler warnings
- place wildcards by the PECS rule in a public API
- replace per-type copies with one generic method
- make generics work with Records and sealed types

## Example prompts
- Improve the code with Generics in this module
- Apply Generics and remove the raw types
- Refactor the code with Generics: check wildcards and casts

# Java Generics Best Practices

Review and improve Java code using comprehensive generics best practices that enforce compile-time type safety and enable flexible, reusable APIs.

**What is covered in this Skill?**

- Type safety: avoiding raw types, eliminating unsafe casts
- Code reusability: generic methods and types for multiple type contexts
- PECS wildcards: `? extends` for producers, `? super` for consumers
- Diamond operator for type inference
- Type erasure awareness: type tokens, factory patterns, array creation
- Generic inheritance and variance: invariance, covariance, contravariance
- `@SafeVarargs` for heap pollution prevention
- Wildcard capture helpers, self-bounded generics (CRTP) for fluent builders
- Proper wildcard API design: `Comparator<? super T>`, `Function<? super T, ? extends R>`
- Arrays-vs-generics covariance pitfalls, serialization with `TypeReference`/`TypeToken`
- Generic naming conventions (`T`, `E`, `K/V`, `?`), typesafe heterogeneous containers
- Integration with Records, sealed types, and pattern matching

**Scope:** The reference is organized by examples (good/bad code patterns) for each core area. Apply recommendations based on applicable examples.

## Constraints

Before applying any generics changes, ensure the project compiles. If compilation fails, stop immediately — do not proceed until resolved. After applying improvements, run full verification.

- **MANDATORY**: Run `./mvnw compile` or `mvn compile` before applying any change
- **SAFETY**: If compilation fails, stop immediately and do not proceed — compilation failure is a blocking condition
- **VERIFY**: Run `./mvnw clean verify` or `mvn clean verify` after applying improvements
- **BEFORE APPLYING**: Read the reference for detailed examples, good/bad patterns, and constraints
