## What it does

The skill breaks the Twelve-Factor App methodology into 51 rules across 12 categories, from codebase management to production operations. Each rule lives in its own file under `references/` and is addressed by name: `code-single-codebase`, `config-use-env-vars`, `proc-stateless-processes`, `log-` and so on. The agent pulls the relevant rule when you discuss deployment, configuration, process architecture or logging.

Categories carry priority levels. Codebase, dependencies and configuration sit at CRITICAL. Backing services, build/release/run, processes, scaling and disposability are HIGH. Port binding, dev/prod parity, logging and admin processes are MEDIUM. That ordering tells you what to inspect first when reviewing a service.

The skill installs into six platforms, each with its own `SKILL.md` path. For Claude that path is `~/.claude/skills/12-factor-app/SKILL.md`. The installer is `npx skills add` from the `pproenca/dot-skills` repository, MIT licensed.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill 12-factor-app -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/12-factor-app/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/12-factor-app/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill 12-factor-app -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/12-factor-app/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill 12-factor-app -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/12-factor-app/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install pproenca/dot-skills 12-factor-app
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/12-factor-app/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill 12-factor-app -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/pproenca/dot-skills --path skills/.experimental/12-factor-app
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/12-factor-app/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill 12-factor-app -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/pproenca/dot-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/.experimental/12-factor-app/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- audit a service against the twelve factors
- move configuration out of code into environment variables
- make builds deterministic with a lockfile
- turn stateful processes into stateless ones without sticky sessions
- add graceful shutdown on SIGTERM

## Example prompts
- check my service against the 12-factor-app rules
- which 12-factor-app rules does this deployment config break?
- show me how to keep secrets out of the repo per 12-factor-app

# Community Cloud-Native Applications Best Practices

Comprehensive methodology for building modern software-as-a-service applications that are portable, scalable, and maintainable. Contains 51 rules across 12 categories, covering the entire application lifecycle from codebase management to production operations.

## When to Apply

Reference these guidelines when:
- Designing new backend services or APIs
- Containerizing applications for Kubernetes or Docker
- Setting up CI/CD pipelines
- Managing configuration across environments
- Implementing logging and monitoring
- Planning application scaling strategy
- Debugging deployment or environment issues

## Rule Categories by Priority

|----------|----------|--------|--------|
| 1 | Codebase & Version Control | CRITICAL | `code-` |
| 2 | Dependencies | CRITICAL | `dep-` |
| 3 | Configuration | CRITICAL | `config-` |
| 4 | Backing Services | HIGH | `svc-` |
| 5 | Build, Release, Run | HIGH | `build-` |
| 6 | Processes & State | HIGH | `proc-` |
| 7 | Concurrency & Scaling | HIGH | `scale-` |
| 8 | Disposability | HIGH | `disp-` |
| 9 | Port Binding | MEDIUM | `port-` |
| 10 | Dev/Prod Parity | MEDIUM | `parity-` |
| 11 | Logging | MEDIUM | `log-` |
| 12 | Admin Processes | MEDIUM | `admin-` |

## Quick Reference

### 1. Codebase & Version Control (CRITICAL)

- [`code-single-codebase`](references/code-single-codebase.md) - Maintain one codebase per application in version control
- [`code-one-app-one-repo`](references/code-one-app-one-repo.md) - Enforce one-to-one correlation between codebase and application
- [`code-deploys-not-branches`](references/code-deploys-not-branches.md) - Use deploys not branches to represent environments
- [`code-shared-as-libraries`](references/code-shared-as-libraries.md) - Factor shared code into libraries managed by dependency manager

### 2. Dependencies (CRITICAL)

- [`dep-explicit-declaration`](references/dep-explicit-declaration.md) - Declare all dependencies explicitly in a manifest file
- [`dep-isolate-execution`](references/dep-isolate-execution.md) - Isolate dependencies to prevent system package leakage
- [`dep-no-system-tools`](references/dep-no-system-tools.md) - Never rely on implicit system tools being available
- [`dep-deterministic-builds`](references/dep-deterministic-builds.md) - Use lockfiles for deterministic dependency resolution

### 3. Configuration (CRITICAL)
