# 112-java-maven-plugins

A skill that adds and configures Maven plugins in pom.xml by asking one question at a time. Useful when you need quality checks, coverage or an image build.

## What it does

The skill runs a question flow first: project type (library, CLI, microservice, serverless, POC), target Java version, and which build aspects matter. Follow-ups depend on your answers — a coverage threshold for JaCoCo, a Sonar organization id and project key, an image name for Jib. Only then does it read the matching references and edit `pom.xml`.

Covered plugins include Maven Compiler, Enforcer, Surefire, Failsafe, Spotless, Flatten, Versions, Git Commit ID and Jib. Profiles cover JaCoCo, PiTest, OWASP dependency check, SpotBugs, PMD, SonarQube/SonarCloud, JMH and cyclomatic complexity. Existing plugins, properties and profiles stay as they are: the skill adds new entries and asks before touching anything already configured.

Before any edit it insists on running `./mvnw validate` or `mvn validate`, and stops if validation fails. It also checks for Maven Wrapper files in the project root and offers to install them with `mvn wrapper:wrapper` when `mvnw` and `.mvn/wrapper/maven-wrapper.properties` are missing. So on a broken build the skill won't start at all — fix the project first.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 112-java-maven-plugins -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/112-java-maven-plugins/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/112-java-maven-plugins/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 112-java-maven-plugins -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/112-java-maven-plugins/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 112-java-maven-plugins -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/112-java-maven-plugins/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jabrena/plinth 112-java-maven-plugins
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/112-java-maven-plugins/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 112-java-maven-plugins -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jabrena/plinth --path skills/112-java-maven-plugins
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/112-java-maven-plugins/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 112-java-maven-plugins -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/jabrena/plinth/tree/HEAD/skills/112-java-maven-plugins/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- add quality-check plugins to `pom.xml` without hunting for versions
- set a JaCoCo coverage threshold that fits the project
- wire up OWASP dependency check scanning
- build a container image with Jib under a chosen name
- split unit and integration tests between Surefire and Failsafe

## Example prompts
- Add Maven plugins for code quality checks to pom.xml
- Configure the JaCoCo profile with an 80% coverage threshold
- Review Maven plugin versions and executions in pom.xml

# Maven Plugins: pom.xml Configuration Best Practices

Configure Maven plugins and profiles in pom.xml using a structured, question-driven process that preserves existing configuration. **This is an interactive SKILL**.

**What is covered in this Skill?**

Maven plugins:

- Maven Compiler
- Maven Enforcer
- Maven Surefire
- Maven Failsafe
- HTML test reports (Surefire Report, JXR)
- Maven Spotless
- Maven Flatten
- Maven Versions
- Maven Git Commit ID
- Maven Jib

Maven profiles:

- JaCoCo (code coverage)
- PiTest (mutation testing)
- Security (OWASP dependency check)
- Static analysis (SpotBugs, PMD)
- SonarQube/SonarCloud
- JMH (Java Microbenchmark Harness)
- Cyclomatic complexity

## Constraints

Before applying plugin recommendations, ensure the project is in a valid state. Use a structured, question-driven process that preserves existing configuration and adds only what the user selects.

- **MANDATORY**: Run `./mvnw validate` or `mvn validate` before applying any plugin recommendations
- **SAFETY**: If validation fails, stop and ask the user to fix issues—do not proceed until resolved
- **SCOPE**: Begin with Step 1 (existing configuration analysis) before any changes. Never remove or replace existing plugins; only add new ones that do not conflict
- **BEFORE READING PLUGIN REFERENCES**: Run the question flow embedded in this SKILL.md first. Ask questions one-by-one in strict order, collect all selected plugins/profiles and conditional values, then read only the implementation references selected by the user's answers

## When to use this skill

- Add Maven plugins in pom.xml
- Improve Maven plugins in pom.xml
- Configure Maven quality plugins in pom.xml
