## What it does

This rule gives Cursor project guidance for TanStack Start, TanStack Router, and React. It covers file-based routing, `createServerFn` handlers with Zod input validation, route loaders, and mutations using TanStack Query. For most server-side logic it points to server functions; raw HTTP routes are reserved for cases such as webhooks and third-party integrations.

The guidance also shows how to stream non-critical data with `defer()` and `<Suspense>`, guard routes with `beforeLoad`, and read cookies or headers from server context. Deployment presets are configured in `app.config.ts`; listed targets include Node.js, Vercel, Netlify, Bun, and Cloudflare Pages. Client components should not access `process.env`, so keep server-only variables on the server.

For Cursor, place the rule at `.cursor/rules/tanstack-start-cursorrules-prompt-file.mdc`. Its glob covers `**/*`, while `alwaysApply: false` means it is not applied unconditionally.

## Install

### Cursor (native platform)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/rules/tanstack-start-cursorrules-prompt-file.mdc` — Frontmatter: description, globs, alwaysApply

### Claude Code

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/rules/tanstack-start-cursorrules-prompt-file.md` — The paths frontmatter field limits the files: move globs from the source into paths

### Codex

**AGENTS.md**
- Codex reads AGENTS.md: paste the rule text there

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/instructions/tanstack-start-cursorrules-prompt-file.instructions.md` — The applyTo field sets which files it applies to: move globs from the source into applyTo

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/rules/tanstack-start-cursorrules-prompt-file.md`

### Cline

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.clinerules/tanstack-start-cursorrules-prompt-file.md`

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/PatrickJS/awesome-cursorrules/tree/HEAD/rules/tanstack-start-cursorrules-prompt-file.mdc

## When to use it
- structure file-based routes in a TanStack Start app
- define a Zod-validated server function
- load route data and handle mutations with TanStack Query
- stream non-critical results with `defer()` and `<Suspense>`
- guard routes and read cookies in server context

## Example prompts
- Create a server function that fetches a post by ID and validates its input with Zod.
- Add a `/posts/$postId` route that loads the post through a server function.
- Stream comments with `defer()` and render them inside `<Suspense>`.

# TanStack Start Guidelines

## What is TanStack Start
TanStack Start is a full-stack React framework built on top of TanStack Router and Vinxi (Vite + Nitro). It provides SSR, streaming, server functions, and API routes with end-to-end type safety.

## Core Principles
- TanStack Start is file-based routing via TanStack Router — all routing conventions apply
- Server Functions (`createServerFn`) are the primary way to run server-side logic
- Full-stack type safety: server function inputs/outputs are typed end-to-end
- Streaming and Suspense are first-class — use them for progressive rendering
- Start is NOT an API-first framework — server functions replace REST endpoints for most use cases

## Project Structure
```
src/
  routes/
    __root.tsx          ← Root layout with HTML shell
    index.tsx           ← Home route
    posts/
      index.tsx
      $postId.tsx
  server/
    functions/          ← Server functions (recommended organization)
      posts.ts
      auth.ts
  lib/
    db.ts               ← Database client
    auth.ts             ← Auth utilities
app.config.ts           ← TanStack Start / Vinxi config
```

## app.config.ts
```ts
import { defineConfig } from '@tanstack/start/config'
import tsConfigPaths from 'vite-tsconfig-paths'
export default defineConfig({
  vite: {
    plugins: [tsConfigPaths()],
  },
  server: {
    preset: 'node-server', // or 'vercel', 'netlify', 'bun', 'cloudflare-pages'
  },
})
```

## Root Route Setup
```tsx
// src/routes/__root.tsx
import { createRootRoute, ScrollRestoration, Scripts, Outlet } from '@tanstack/react-router'
import { ReactQueryDevtools } from '@tanstack/react-query-devtools'
import { TanStackRouterDevtools } from '@tanstack/router-devtools'
export const Route = createRootRoute({
  component: RootComponent,
})
function RootComponent() {
  return (
    <html lang="en">
      <head />
      <body>
        <Outlet />
        <ScrollRestoration />
        <Scripts />
        {process.env.NODE_ENV === 'development' && (
          <>
            <TanStackRouterDevtools />
            <ReactQueryDevtools />
          </>
        )}
      </body>
    </html>
  )
}
```

## Server Functions
- Use `createServerFn` to define functions that always run on the server
- Validate inputs with Zod using `.validator()`
- Use `.handler()` for the implementation
- Server functions are called like regular async functions from components or loaders
```ts
// src/server/functions/posts.ts
import { createServerFn } from '@tanstack/start'
import { z } from 'zod'
export const getPost = createServerFn()
  .validator(z.object({ id: z.string() }))
  .handler(async ({ data }) => {
    const post = await db.post.findUnique({ where: { id: data.id } })
    if (!post) throw new Error('Post not found')
    return post
  })
export const createPost = createServerFn()
  .validator(z.object({ title: z.string().min(1), body: z.string() }))
  .handler(async ({ data, context }) => {
    // context has access to request headers, cookies, etc.
    return db.post.create({ data })
  })
```

## Using Server Functions in Routes
```tsx
// src/routes/posts/$postId.tsx
````
