# shadcn

A Cursor rule that pins down how a team builds with shadcn/ui: folder layout, typed props, CVA variants, forms on React Hook Form and Zod. Useful once a component library starts growing.

## What it does

The file `.cursor/rules/shadcn.mdc` hooks into Cursor and applies across the project. Inside are seven sections, each pairing a bad example with a good one: code organization, component architecture, TypeScript and API design, theming, common patterns, performance, accessibility. The agent reads those examples and mirrors them in new code.

Domain components go under `components/<domain>`, reusable primitives under `components/ui`, each in its own PascalCase file. Components are functional, with `React.forwardRef` and `asChild` support via the Radix Slot, variants built with `class-variance-authority`, classes merged through a `cn` helper. Props are declared as interfaces, forms validated with Zod schemas, and `any` is out in favor of explicit types. Heavy blocks such as dialogs and data tables are meant to load through `React.lazy`.

The accessibility section cuts off mid-sentence, so don't lean on it. One more thing: the rule is strict about file layout, so a project that already organizes components differently will get pulled toward its scheme. Either adopt it or rewrite the rule to match your structure.

## Install

### Cursor (native platform)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/rules/shadcn.mdc` — Frontmatter: description, globs, alwaysApply

### Claude Code

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/rules/shadcn.md` — The paths frontmatter field limits the files: move globs from the source into paths

### Codex

**AGENTS.md**
- Codex reads AGENTS.md: paste the rule text there

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/instructions/shadcn.instructions.md` — The applyTo field sets which files it applies to: move globs from the source into applyTo

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/rules/shadcn.md`

### Cline

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.clinerules/shadcn.md`

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/sanjeed5/awesome-cursor-rules-mdc/tree/HEAD/rules-mdc/shadcn.mdc

## When to use it
- split components into domain folders and reusable primitives
- add forwardRef and asChild to hand-rolled buttons and inputs
- move button variants into CVA instead of conditionals in className
- wire Zod validation into React Hook Form
- replace any in props with real interfaces

## Example prompts
- Create a Button component in components/ui/Button.tsx following the shadcn rule: forwardRef, asChild, CVA variants
- Rewrite the profile form with React Hook Form and Zod, keep the schema next to the component
- Reorganize existing components into components/<domain> and components/ui, one file each

# shadcn Best Practices

This document outlines our team's definitive best practices for developing with `shadcn/ui`. Adhere to these guidelines for all `shadcn` component development and integration.

## 1. Code Organization and Structure

Organize components logically to reflect UI hierarchy and promote discoverability.

**Rule:** Place domain-specific components under `components/<domain>` and reusable UI primitives under `components/ui`. Each component must reside in its own PascalCase file.

❌ BAD:
```
// components/Button.tsx
// components/profile-card.tsx
// components/user-settings/index.tsx (contains multiple components)
```

✅ GOOD:
```
// components/ui/Button.tsx
// components/forms/DatePicker.tsx
// components/layout/Sidebar.tsx
// components/forms/index.ts
export * from "./DatePicker";
export * from "./Input";
```

## 2. Component Architecture

Favor functional components, composition, and explicit prop definitions.

**Rule:** Use functional components with `React.forwardRef` and `asChild` for seamless integration with Radix primitives.

❌ BAD:
```tsx
// No ref forwarding, no asChild
const Button = ({ children, onClick }) => (
  <button onClick={onClick}>{children}</button>
);
```

✅ GOOD:
```tsx
// components/ui/Button.tsx
import * as React from "react";
import { Slot } from "@radix-ui/react-slot";
import { cva, type VariantProps } from "class-variance-authority";
import { cn } from "@/lib/utils"; // Assuming you have a cn utility
const buttonVariants = cva(
  "inline-flex items-center justify-center rounded-md text-sm font-medium",
  {
    variants: {
      variant: {
        default: "bg-primary text-primary-foreground hover:bg-primary/90",
        destructive: "bg-destructive text-destructive-foreground",
      },
      size: {
        default: "h-10 px-4 py-2",
        sm: "h-9 rounded-md px-3",
      },
    },
    defaultVariants: {
      variant: "default",
      size: "default",
    },
  }
);
export interface ButtonProps
  extends React.ButtonHTMLAttributes<HTMLButtonElement>,
    VariantProps<typeof buttonVariants> {
  asChild?: boolean;
}
const Button = React.forwardRef<HTMLButtonElement, ButtonProps>(
  ({ className, variant, size, asChild = false, ...props }, ref) => {
    const Comp = asChild ? Slot : "button";
    return (
      <Comp
        className={cn(buttonVariants({ variant, size, className }))}
        ref={ref}
        {...props}
      />
    );
  }
);
Button.displayName = "Button";
export { Button, buttonVariants };
```

## 3. TypeScript and API Design

Enforce strict TypeScript with clear interfaces and robust validation.

**Rule:** Use interfaces for component props. Validate form data with Zod schemas. Avoid `any` and prefer explicit types.

❌ BAD:
```typescript
// Vague props, no validation
type UserFormProps = {
  data: any;
  onSubmit: (values: any) => void;
};
```

✅ GOOD:
```typescript
// components/forms/UserForm.tsx
import { z } from "zod";
export interface UserFormProps {
  initialData?: UserFormData;
  onSubmit: (values: UserFormData) => void;
}
export const userFormSchema = z.object({
  id: z.string().optional(),
  name: z.string().min(2, "Name must be at least 2 characters."),
