# security-and-owasp

This rule guides GitHub Copilot in spotting risky web-application patterns and suggesting safer code. Use it when reviewing database queries, user input, or file access.

## What it does

The rule applies across project files and describes security issues with severity levels, detection methods, OWASP 2025 references, and corrective examples. Covered cases include SQL and NoSQL injection, shell commands that receive user input, XSS, SSRF, and unsafe file paths.

Examples show safer alternatives, such as parameterized SQL instead of string-built queries and sanitized HTML instead of raw user content. The command-execution guidance also calls for bounded runtime and output size. Short version: it gives Copilot concrete patterns to check.

Place the rule at `.github/instructions/security-and-owasp.instructions.md`. The examples in the available section use TypeScript and Node.js, so their code may need adapting when your project uses a different stack.

## Install

### GitHub Copilot (native platform)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/instructions/security-and-owasp.instructions.md` — The applyTo field sets which files it applies to

### Claude Code

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/rules/security-and-owasp.md` — The paths frontmatter field limits the files: move applyTo from the source into paths

### Codex

**AGENTS.md**
- Codex reads AGENTS.md: paste the rule text there

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/rules/security-and-owasp.mdc` — Frontmatter: description, globs, alwaysApply. Move applyTo from the source into globs, or the rule will not attach on its own

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/rules/security-and-owasp.md`

### Cline

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.clinerules/security-and-owasp.md`

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/github/awesome-copilot/tree/HEAD/instructions/security-and-owasp.instructions.md

## When to use it
- catch SQL injection in database queries
- check rendering code for cross-site scripting
- spot shell commands that use request data
- restrict user-provided URLs to reduce SSRF risk
- prevent file reads from escaping an allowed directory

## Example prompts
- Review this request handler for SQL injection and suggest a safer query.
- Check this component for unsafe rendering of user-provided HTML.
- Inspect this file-reading code for path traversal risks.

# Security Standards

Comprehensive security rules for web application development. Every anti-pattern includes a severity classification, detection method, OWASP 2025 reference, and corrective code examples.

**Severity levels:**

- **CRITICAL** — Exploitable vulnerability. Must be fixed before merge.
- **IMPORTANT** — Significant risk. Should be fixed in the same sprint.
- **SUGGESTION** — Defense-in-depth improvement. Plan for a future iteration.

## Injection Anti-Patterns (I1-I8)

### I1: SQL Injection via String Concatenation

- **Severity**: CRITICAL
- **Detection**: `\$\{.*\}.*(?:SELECT|INSERT|UPDATE|DELETE|FROM|WHERE)`
- **OWASP**: A05

```typescript
// BAD
const unsafeResult = await db.query(`SELECT * FROM users WHERE id = ${userId}`);
// GOOD — parameterized query
const safeResult = await db.query('SELECT * FROM users WHERE id = $1', [userId]);
```

### I2: NoSQL Injection (MongoDB Operator Injection)

- **Severity**: CRITICAL
- **Detection**: `\{\s*\$(?:gt|gte|lt|lte|ne|in|nin|regex|where|exists)`
- **OWASP**: A05

```typescript
// BAD — attacker sends { "password": { "$gt": "" } }
const user = await User.findOne({ username: req.body.username, password: req.body.password });
// GOOD — validate and cast input types
const username = String(req.body.username);
const password = String(req.body.password);
const user = await User.findOne({ username });
const valid = user && await verifyPassword(user.passwordHash, password);
```

### I3: Command Injection (exec with User Input)

- **Severity**: CRITICAL
- **Detection**: `(?:exec|execSync|execFile|execFileSync)\s*\(.*(?:req\.|params\.|query\.|body\.)`
- **OWASP**: A05

```typescript
// BAD — shell interpolation, sync call blocks the event loop
import { execFileSync } from 'node:child_process';
const unsafeOutput = execFileSync('sh', ['-c', `ls -la ${req.query.dir}`]);
// GOOD — async execFile, arguments array, no shell, bounded time/output
import { execFile } from 'node:child_process';
import { promisify } from 'node:util';
const pExecFile = promisify(execFile);
const dir = String(req.query.dir ?? '');
if (!dir || dir.startsWith('-')) throw new Error('Invalid directory');
const { stdout: safeOutput } = await pExecFile('ls', ['-la', '--', dir], {
  timeout: 5_000,      // fail fast on hung processes
  maxBuffer: 1 << 20,  // 1 MiB cap to prevent memory exhaustion
});
